SCHOOL NURSE - CARSHALTON SURREY
Competitive salary - term time only

A vacancy has arisen for a School Nurse to start in September. A suitably experienced candidate is therefore required to be responsible for the medical needs of pupils whilst in school and provide pastoral and well-being support in order to help reduce absenteeism, improve children's health and support learning. The School Nurse will also provide first aid and minor injury assessment for all members of the school community. They are looking for individuals with enthusiasm and energy, who are approachable and empathetic, with both the desire and ability to make a difference. Hours: The normal hours of duty will be 36 hours per week (with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break); typically the
working pattern will be similar to below:
Monday 08:00 - 15:45
Tuesday 08:00 - 15:45
Wednesday 08:00 - 15:45
Thursday 08:00 - 15:30
Friday 08:00 - 15:45
It may be necessary to vary this pattern on certain occasions during the year.

Specific Duties
Support for Students
· To provide first aid cover.
· To manage the medical room, ensuring it is tidy and hygienic at all times.
· To support students with medical needs such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or mental health problems.
· To provide medical support for students with Educational Health Care Plans.
· To be responsible for the writing, monitoring, evaluation and updating of Health Care Plans.
· To administer and ensure students take their medication in liaison with parents.
· To support students if they require hospital treatment, including attending Accident and Emergency as
required and communicating with the family.
· To provide a confidential counselling and health advice service. This will involve offering counselling
and support sessions to pupils for a range of issues including academic problems, difficulties with peers,
emotional issues, parent relationship problems and bereavement. The post holder will refer students
to other mental health professionals where the level of intervention required lies outside their
expertise.
· To raise awareness of issues that can have a negative effect on student health.
Support for Staff
· To support staff with minor medical needs.
Support for the School
· To act as the school's principle first aider.
· To promote healthy living.
· To oversee the work of the First Aid Team across the whole school and ensure they are trained to
comply with all required aspects.
· To organise the administration of immunisations and vaccinations.
· To facilitate sexual health and relations classes, reflecting the National Curriculum.
· To support safeguarding procedures and attend relevant meetings with other professional agencies.
· To maintain First Aid boxes to the required standard.
· To meet with parents to provide support and raise awareness of healthy living.
· Maintain an accurate medical database and keep all medical and wellbeing documentation and case
records secure, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

· To update SIMS with information relating to accidents/incidents at the action taken.
· Liaise with Diabetic Nurse Team and attend any meetings.
· Liaise with other professionals, such as GPs and the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)
and attend multi-agency meetings when necessary.
· To identify any potential safeguarding issues and communicate these through the appropriate channels.
· To regularly conduct a medical stock check and follow industry recommendations for the safe storage,
usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
· Draft and communicate Risk Assessments for pupils attending school (including attending educational
visits) with a serious medical or mobility issue (whether that condition is temporary or chronic).
· To carry out any other duties appropriate to the post which may be required, as the role develops.
