Calverton Hill provides care and treatment within a medium secure environment for men and women aged 18 years and older, with learning disability and women with mental illness and/or personality disorders. This is a purpose built facility that consists of:

Medium secure mental illness and personality disorder service for women
Medium secure learning disability service for men
Medium secure learning disability

The business has four types of customer; patients, staff, purchasers and external agencies.

It is the objective of PiC Midlands to be the independent sector provider of choice in the field.  PiC are committed to responding positively to customer needs and to delivering services of   measurable quality.

Patients referred to PiC Midlands may suffer from mental illness, personality disorder and/or learning disabilities.  Patients at the PiC Midlands are detained under the Mental Health Act.  Referrals are taken from many sources including psychiatric hospitals, prisons and the courts.

The workforce of the organisation is multidisciplinary; a significant proportion of those are employed within the clinical disciplines, and in addition other departments provide support services.

 

KEY OUTPUTS

Clinical responsibilities:

With supervision from the Ward/Lead Occupational Therapists:

 

  • To plan and run on & off ward based sessions comprising of stimulating, motivating and diversional activities, at times, in conjunction with other staff.
  • Activities should comprise of a variety of intervention including; creative, educational, social, living skills, recreational, practical and skill development, recovery focus.
  • To adhere to patient focused recovery approach, appreciating the need to work with, rather than for, patients.
  • Work collaboratively with patients and staff to structure activities.
  • To undertake group and individual sessions with patients that promotes engagement rather than restriction.
  • To contribute to establishing a structure to the day for patients.
  • To assist in the continued monitoring, observation and evaluation of patients interaction and wellbeing.
  • To ensure that patient’s records and timetables are updated efficiently.
  • To liaise closely with members of the multi-disciplinary team and Occupational Therapy team, showing a commitment to effective teamwork in the planning and delivery of patient’s programmes.
  • To maintain records of performance for individual patients and to provide data for use at ward rounds and patient reviews.
  • To ensure the health and safety of patients within individual or group sessions and assist in taking
  •               precautions against accidents to both staff and patients.
  •  To report any accidents in full accordance with the hospital procedures.
  • To assist and support the process of devising, planning and reviewing intervention programmes
  • Cross ward work as required to ensure continuity of care and staff skill development.

Administration and Training Responsibilities:

  • To comply with patient contact targets.
  • To maintain equipment/resources and group rooms and inform the supervisor of any repairs or maintenance that may be required.
  • To inform the Lead Occupational Therapist, in a timely manner, of any equipment or materials which may need  ordering and rationale for their requirement.
  • To be informed of, and maintain compliance with, all policies and procedures relating to the Occupational Therapy Service and those adopted within PiC Midlands.
  • To attend and participate in the Occupational Therapy Service ‘In-Service Training’ sessions and other compulsory training requirements of the company or as requested by the Lead Occupational Therapist.
  • To attend agreed external courses/conferences in order to facilitate professional and personal development according to training objectives formally identified.
  • To keep up to date with current and emerging themes that may influence or have an impact on patient recovery and Occupational Therapy service delivery, as directed by the Lead Occupational Therapist.
  • To participate in the support and guidance of Student Occupational Therapists, dependent on own professional and personal level of confidence, knowledge and experience.
  • To actively participate in Quality audit systems adopted by the Occupational Therapy Service and PiC Midlands.
  • To assist in the review, evaluation and development of the Occupational Therapy Service being provided as directed by the Lead Occupational Therapist.
  • To participate in service meetings, offering input in the plans for the future development of the Recovery team and Occupational Therapy service, and ensure that good communication is maintained.
  • To participate in clinical supervision and the organisation’s system of appraisal.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties and training as required that are commensurate with the post’s level of responsibility.

 

 

 

Safe Working Practices:

  • Be aware of and comply with all company policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ensure robust risk management strategies are followed as per policy and local protocol.
  •  Comply with the provisions of the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work act 1974 with regard to health and welfare of patients, staff and visitors.
  • In conjunction with Lead Occupational Therapist, ensure sound risk management systems are in place and that these are followed adequately.

 

 

 

 

NEED TO KNOW

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Good general education with good standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Creative practical skills in art & craft, gardening, cooking or other leisure activities
  • Ability to motivate self and others
  • Good ability to develop rapport
  • Teaching qualification preferable

 

Previous experience and knowledge:

  • Preferably have experience working within a secure environment
  • Experience working within a mental health setting
  • Understanding of mental health issues
  • Experience of managing challenging behaviour
  • Experience of running groups and good knowledge of group skills
  • Understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy
  • Good understanding of the Recovery Model.

  • Evidence of efficient use of resources and being budget conscientious 
  • Robust risk management skills

 

Additional Information:

Recovery staff may be expected to undertake other reasonable duties and training as required that are commensurate with the post’s level of responsibility.
