Break into prison healthcare!

Are you looking for a full or part time, rewarding nursing role within a Primary Care environment, developing your clinical skills in an environment where no two days are the same? Then HMP Wormwood Scrubs is a Category B men's prison, located in the Wormwood Scrubs area of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham could be the place for you to start or develop your nursing career! Nursing in prison is never dull or predictable. On any given day the skills you use may be similar to those you need working in health promotion or A&E, alternatively you may be supporting people to manage their mental health or substance misuse. It’s this variety that keeps things fresh and stimulating. Every day will bring new challenges and new experiences. But at the same time, you’ll have all the support you need to deliver the best care possible. At Care UK, our belief in putting the patient first, regardless of the environment or their history, combined with our insistence on quality healthcare has proved to be hugely successful. As a Registered General Nurse, you'll work as part of a team of Primary Care Nurses within HMP Wormwood Scrub's Integrated Healthcare Services, a local prison for adult males aged over 21. HMP Wormwood Scrubs is a large category B remand prison, which can currently house up to 1,296 prisoners, with an inpatient unit of 17 beds and a pharmacy dispensary facility.

About the Job

Nursing in prison is never dull or predictable! On any given day, the skills you use may be similar to those you need working in health promotion or A&E or you may be supporting people to manage their mental health or substance misuse. It’s this variety that keeps things fresh and stimulating. Every day will bring new challenges and new experiences. But at the same time, you’ll have all the support you need to deliver the best care possible, through continued development, on and off site training and peer mentorship. It’s not just the environment that’s varied here, the role is too. The role will be an experience like no other, requiring a diverse and mixed nursing skills and background - you can expect to be involved in everything from clinical triage to the evaluation and development of patient care and standards. You’ll carry out – and potentially develop – nurse-led clinics, reviewing patient histories, undertaking relevant examinations and tests, organising any necessary treatment and referring patients to other healthcare professionals when you need to. You will also be responsible for attending medical emergencies as a first responder and delivering emergency care. Across everything you do, you’ll maintain accurate records and provide the kind of helpful, empathetic support that will make every patient feel at ease. You will be joining the service following a highly successful and positive HMIP/CQC Inspection for the Healthcare Service, from which we were praised highly for our improvements in practice over the last 18 months, our excellent patient centred and engaged activity and our dedicated, motivated and committed workforce. We still have some work to do, and you could join the team as we continue to grow in strength, and offer an even greater provision for our patients.

About You:

An RGN 1 with NMC registration, you’ll bring a good knowledge of clinical governance and experience of carrying out clinical audits. We’ll want to see evidence of your continued professional development, and a real passion for taking your skills even further. It goes without saying that you’ll have a solid understanding of health and safety, along with exemplary record keeping skills. Self-motivated and able to work autonomously, you’ll show plenty of initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations. We’re looking for an excellent communicator – someone who can guide and influence others to take the right course of action. Beyond that, you should have a flexible approach and the ability to achieve changing priorities by managing your own time. The sheer breadth of what we do makes this an exciting and dynamic environment in which to stretch your skills. The training we offer here is second-to-none and we’ll support your professional development both in terms of time, and financial support. These roles offer great front-line exposure, including triage work, and we’ll also give you a real say in how things are done. Your ideas and opinions will matter.
