The Harley Street Clinic specialises in cardiac, oncology and neurosciences and undertakes some of the most complex surgery within the private sector. The Portland Hospital specialises in a wide range of general and specialist care to children, including urgent care. A family centred approach to care is used and careful consideration given to meeting the individual needs of all our patients.

Job Description

The Risk Matron will ensure effective departmental processes are in place to enhance the patient experience of care delivery and support the multidisciplinary teams in providing high quality nursing care. The role of the Risk Matron will be to provide visible leadership, guidance and support to ward teams in the implementation of clinical standards and quality initiatives in line with the hospital’s risk management framework.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Be accountable for quality aspects of the CQC domains: responsive, well led, caring, safe.
  • Provide support and work with ward teams to deliver departmental and organisational quality improvement projects.
  • Maintain a high profile within both hospitals and be available to patients and their parents/carers thereby promoting confidence in our services.
  • Maintain standards for clinical practice and ensure teams have the skills to deliver the needs of the nursing service in a safe, efficient and effective way.
  • Promote and enhance patient focused care by assessing areas of risk in relation to patient safety and implementing initiatives to improve patient experience.
  • Work with the Deputy CNO – Children’s Services, Clinical Nurse Managers, nursing teams and other members of the multi professional team to ensure that quality management is embedded into the Children’s Services culture across all departments.
  • Promote clinical governance and service improvements following the analysis of complaints, adverse events and other drivers for change.
  • Encourage the involvement of all staff in quality issues through open and direct communication with the teams.
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team fostering a positive approach to quality improvement and supporting staff in the development of these skills.
  • Ensure that Safeguarding is integrated into practice, and ensure that child protection issues are managed effectively supporting the Safeguarding Nurse as required.
  • Provide leadership and support to the nursing teams and to act as a role model.
  • Participate as a member of the senior nursing team across both facilities.
  • To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and apply to the working environment.
  • Collate and analyse data as required to prepare and present reports to relevant forums.
  • Facilitate team awareness and monitor compliance pertaining to, regulations and standards appropriate for their department, particularly in regard to CQC and CHKS.
  • Ensure departmental teams are informed, trained and developed to provide positive patient experience.
  • Manage the Clinical Practice Facilitators and support the senior nursing team for Children’s Services in developing a practice development plan for each unit, including supporting the rotation of staff cross site.
  • To co-ordinate and lead on implementation of education and training relating to quality, risk and safety to all members of staffing working in collaboration with the CPF team.
  • Ensure new developments in nursing practice, new procedures and innovations are introduced with relevant training and education.

Skills & Experience

  • NMC Registered Children’s Nurse
  • Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies, at a minimum educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Higher degree eg MSc Nursing degree
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification. ENB 998 or equivalent essential
  • Leadership or management training
  • Level 3 safeguarding trained
  • IT literate including emails and Office packages
  • Evidence of continued professional development

  • Excellent understanding of the principles of clinical governance including risk management
  • Ability to complete robust incident investigations and root cause analysis with effective action planning
  • Strong commitment to improving quality and ability to produce effective ways of working to improve service delivery and patient outcomes
  • Excellent understanding of managing the clinical audit process
  • Well - developed leadership, negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to empower, motivate and enthuse individuals / teams
  • Excellent organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail and ability to prioritise and delegate workload effectively
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Ability to present and write concise accurate reports
  • Be confident and able to deal with and resolve complex situations including conflict resolution
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
