Job Description

This is a Full Time position, working 37.5 hours per week, with hours to be worked flexibly around core business hours. The facility will operate from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 6:00 am – 10:00 pm The Senior Physiotherapist will provide highest standard of patient care through treatment and rehabilitation programmes: To carry out accurate physiotherapy assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with diverse clinical presentations and complex needs in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. This will be on an inpatient and outpatient basis. To provide clinical supervision and facilitate the learning and development of Senior 2 staff members and therapy assistants within paediatrics. To be responsible for the daily routine on allocated wards in conjunction with interdisciplinary team members and ensure physiotherapy responsibilities are met. To work as an effective member of the physiotherapy and interdisciplinary team To provide advice, guidance and information to health care professionals, carers, relatives and other non professionals in the management of patients To participate in weekday and weekend emergency on call rotas To be actively involved in supervision, education, evidence based practice and audit projects at The Portland Hospital and within the HCA group for the development of the physiotherapy service, therapy services and own personal and professional clinical practice. To assist in identifying opportunities to improve the Physiotherapy service in order to provide the best patient care within the resources available To undertake other duties at the request of the Therapy Services Manager

Duties & Responsibilities

To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care. To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients, including those with diverse or complex pathology/presentations using appropriate clinical reasoning skills, observation skills and manual assessment skills to provide an accurate physiotherapy diagnosis and demonstrate an understanding of the neurophysiology associated with the condition To formulate and implement individual physiotherapy treatment programs based on comprehensive knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, appropriate and accurate clinical reasoning, and knowledge of appropriate treatment techniques. To provide physiotherapy intervention where there may be barriers to understanding such as foreign language or due to speech/hearing/visual impairment, cognitive/perceptual difficulties To assess patient/ family/ carer understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment To utilise handling techniques which require skill, precision and sensory coordination to provide accurate and effective treatment and feedback To evaluate patient progress, reassess and progress or alter patient treatment programs within the specified timeframes compliant with The Portland Hospital care pathways. To develop and implement comprehensive discharge plans in conjunction with other interdisciplinary team members, including liaising with external agencies. To work closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure that patient centered goals are set and that the outcome of intervention is monitored. To attend relevant case conferences, goal setting meetings and handover sessions and represent the physiotherapy service or interdisciplinary team at individual patient and interdisciplinary team meetings To be responsible for organising and planning of the physiotherapy caseload on the paediatric wards in conjunction with Physiotherapists, to meet the service and patients needs, readjusting plans as situations change or arise.

Skills & Experience

Physiotherapy degree qualification or equivalent Health and Care Professions Council Physiotherapy registration Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapists or equivalent is desirable Member of professional interest group is desirable Evidence of postgraduate education in the field of paediatric orthopaedics/ musculoskeletal Post registration broad clinical experience in all areas of paediatrics Post registration specific experience working in paediatrics within a hospital setting including participation in an on call rota An understanding of adjuncts used in the treatment of patients with orthopaedic/ musculoskeletal conditions such as serial casting, application of splints and harnesses and the provision of equipment An understanding of the current issues within physiotherapy A clear understanding of clinical governance and risk Ability to comprehend and work within HCA’s policies including data protection, equal opportunities, health and safety and manual handling to meet the differing needs of the patient Ability to observe confidentiality at all times Ability to participate in weekend problem solver and weekend and weekday on call rotas Excellent spoken and written English Ability to work with interpreters Ability to use a computer (Microsoft Word) / camcorder / digital camera

The successful candidate will have good communication skills with an ability to liaise with consultants, managers, staff and patients. They will have an ability to organise and manage their own caseloads and prioritise tasks accordingly.
