HCA Healthcare UK at University College Hospital is a complex cancer centre specialising in haematological cancers and stem cell transplant.  It is one of only a few centres in the UK to have JACIE accreditation for its stem cell transplant service.  The HCA at UCH campus now consists of a 31 bed inpatient unit and a day case and outpatient unit. 

The successful applicant will provide a comprehensive pharmacy service to users at HCA Healthcare UK at University College Hospital (incorporating UCH and the Macmillan Cancer Centre).

Job Description

Exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual who is proactive and has great interpersonal skills to join and contribute to providing a comprehensive pharmacy service to users at HCA Healthcare UK at UCH (incorporating UCH and the Macmillan Cancer Centre).

The post-holder will be an experienced Cancer Services pharmacist, who is motivated, proactive and can contribute to the development and growth of the pharmacy departments across HCA at University College Hospital, a private cancer unit specialising in haematological cancers and stem cell transplant.

The successful applicant will be a key member of the pharmacy team and will contribute to the efficient running of the dispensaries, and provide a comprehensive, safe and efficient clinical pharmacy service. 

This is a full time role – working 37.5 hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to inpatients and outpatients, including prescription monitoring, the provision of drug information, medicines reconciliation and patient counselling
  • Participate in discharge planning
  • To maintain a supply of prescribed medications to inpatients
  • To ensure the safe security and correct storage of medications throughout the unit
  • To ensure guidelines are being adhered to in regards to prescribing, supply and administration of medication
  • To liaise with medical, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients are provided with gold standard care and advice, particularly regarding any pharmaceutical issues
  • To clinically verify all chemotherapy prescriptions, ensuring clinically appropriate and legally correct
  • To order and release all chemotherapy in line with local guidelines
  • To order and release parenteral nutrition in line with local guidelines
  • To assist the lead pharmacist in updating and maintaining chemotherapy protocols and procedures
  • To assist lead pharmacist and clinical manager in updating and maintaining the electronic chemotherapy prescribing system
  • To be involved with the implementation of local, network and national standards in relations to cancer services
  • To ensure that hospital policies relating to medicines use are promoted and followed within the department and to actively monitor and promote safe use of medicines.

Skills & Experience

  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Specialist knowledge in haematology pharmacy
  • Specialist knowledge in oncology pharmacy
  • Hospital experience, with experience in cancer services
  • Specialist knowledge of aseptic production desirable
  • Possesses a post graduate diploma or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Health and Safety training
