Manager – Hospice at Home service

Up to £41,000.00 + benefits pa

Black Country

We need a positive, proactive nurse preferably with paediatric experience who’s shown they can manage people and performance to help us deliver community care services for life-limited children. It’s a highly responsible and richly rewarding role; one that will touch many lives – not least, your own.

The challenge

Acorns’ network of care for life-limited and life-threatened children doesn’t stop with our three hospices. Beyond that, across the Black Country we also provide a growing service called ‘Hospice at Home’. Join us and you’ll manage the entire service – setting high standards for a multi-talented team who deliver everything from specialist end-of-life care, symptom management and complementary therapy to play activities, family support and post-bereavement counselling.

As part of our senior management team, you’ll ensure that a diverse team (including nurses, physiotherapists, health assistants, care workers, play assistants and trained volunteers) have the skills and direction they need to deliver the first-class service our families deserve. You’ll make sure that rotas are well coordinated, resources well managed and responsibilities well articulated. A positive role model, you’ll also join our 24-hour call rota yourself to support the delivery of complex end-of life care.

Your accountability extends to risk management, recruitment and health and safety – and for ensuring that we spend every penny of our budgets wisely. You’ll work with the CQC and forge partnerships with colleagues, commissioners, funders and volunteer groups. Looking forward, as part of the senior management team you’ll be instrumental in helping us to evolve and develop this vital, valuable service.

About you

We’re open minded about the right person for the role. It could be a move onwards and upwards in community care, or a change of setting for an RSCN or RN leading in a hospital or hospice environment.

Alongside a nursing qualification, you’ll need experience of delivering holistic, care for children and their families including those with disability and/or complex needs. Beyond that, experience of palliative care would be a huge asset, as would an understanding of the unique demands of nursing in a community setting.

It’s your leadership skills that will make the difference. Flexible and happy taking the initiative, you’re a positive, proactive leader; you’ve shown you can work across boundaries with multi-disciplinary teams and you know how to bring out the best in people – whether that’s through training, good communication or challenging poor performance. You’ll need good assessment skills – you understand how to allocate resources – and you’ve ideally shown you can manage budgets and caseloads too. If not, we’ll support you to develop these more ‘strategic’ skills.

About Acorns

You’re probably aware of Acorns but you might not realise the extent of our work. In the last year, we’ve supported over 760 children and more than 980 families, including those who are bereaved. We offer a network of specialist care for life-limited and life-threatened children and their families, across the heart of England, both in their own homes and in our three purpose-built hospices – the only organisation to do so.
