We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Matron to join our 46 bedded Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the Wellington Hospital based at in St John's Wood, London (NW8 9SG).

Job Description

The post holder will be patient focused and provide dynamic nursing leadership and direction for nursing staff across the service, acting as a point of contact for advice and expertise on all matters relating to the rehabilitation unit. In collaboration with the Director of Rehabilitation (DoR), Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) the post holder will be involved in the planning and implementation of developments relating to nursing throughout the hospital.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week.  

The attractive and competitive salary for this role is £48,000- £59,337 and will be dependent upon skills and experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as a role model for nurses in the designated clinical area, promoting and demonstrating the standards of care and behaviour expected and at all times exhibiting high standards of professional conduct.
  • Recognise clinical issues/problems and take early action as appropriate.
  • Be aware of hospital financial position and target objectives and ensure that the respective unit is as effective as possible in meeting these objectives, by taking a pro-active lead on the work of bank and agency nursing staff to ensure that wards flex their budgets to reduce undue reliance on bank/agency staff. Ensure that the nursing pay budget remains in balance.
  • Provide effective line management to ward managers, sisters and senior staff nurses within the service providing guidance, support and coaching and through them ensure that all nursing staff within the service are appropriately managed, ensuring that associated financial resources are controlled and utilised effectively, demonstrating value for money and high quality patient care.
  • Ensure the development of nursing practice is in line with the latest recommendations, promoting, maintaining and disseminating an evidence based practice culture for nursing staff.
  • Work with members of the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate Inter disciplinary working.
  • Supporting the DoR, Deputy CNO and CNO in developing nursing operational policies and service specifications in line with the requirements of service commissioners.
  • Take lead responsibility for continuous review of support services, e.g. hotel services within areas of responsibility and be proactive, taking remedial action when services, which affect the patient’s experience, fall below standard.
  • Manage HR issues at a local level i.e. performance management and sickness absence with support from senior staff/HR where needed.
  • Provide effective nursing and managerial input into operational and strategic issues including the development and implementation of strategy and policy, which ensures that objectives are achieved within agreed timelines.
  • Participate in clinical audit at local, group and national level. Ensure audits are effective by action planning findings and effecting improvements in patient care/experience.
  • Contribute to the business planning process, supporting the DoR and the business development team in building relationships with key stakeholders such as consultants and funding bodies.

Skills & Experience

  • Registered Nurse Level 1
  • UKCC registration and demonstrate evidence of ongoing education
  • Post registration qualification
  • Management qualification/training
  • At least 5 years post registration experience
  • Knowledge of relevant hospital policies and procedures, including Health and Safety
  • Health and Safety training including moving and handling
  • Must have experience within a neurological rehabilitation unit or within neurology.
