Job Description

• To provide a specialist tertiary level neuropsychology service to both inpatients and outpatients at the Wellington Hospital Acute Rehabilitation Centre. This includes working with those with acquired neurological injury (e.g., TBI, stroke, spinal cord injury) and may also include working with other conditions such as Functional Neurological Disorder and Chronic Pain.

• To work within interdisciplinary teams in providing specialist neuropsychological assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitation, high quality behavioural interventions, comprehensive recommendations, specialist advice, consultation and education for families, as well as health and social service professionals

• To work autonomously within professional guidelines and within the policies and procedures of the department and wider organisation.

• To support the neuropsychological practice of psychologists within the Neuropsychology service as appropriate with peer supervision and discussion.

• To contribute to the flexible delivery of neuropsychological services across the Wellington Hospital, in response to organizational needs, developments and changes

• To employ research skills for audit, policy and service development, and scientific knowledge within the area of clinical neuropsychology

Duties & Responsibilities

• To provide specialist neuropsychological assessment, interpretation and cognitive rehabilitation to clients in the Acute Rehabilitation Centre and elsewhere in the hospital, taking into account the highly complex psychological, biological, developmental, interpersonal, social and cultural contexts, as well as the expressed preferences and needs of the client and their family or carers.

• To contribute to the delivery and development of clinical services for individuals with acquired neurological injury, in order to maintain, promote and re-establish independence and psychological wellbeing.

• To undertake clinical work as appropriate in all required settings including the rehabilitation wards, general hospital wards, the outside environment or patient’s homes.

• To assess patients in Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness, severe cognitive impairment and low awareness or post traumatic amnesia and to advise the rehabilitation team on appropriate management.

• To assess and treat people with functional neurological symptoms, and work autonomously and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of clinicians specialising in working with Functional Neurological Disorder.

• To be responsible for implementing a range of behavioural rehabilitation techniques for individuals and groups, drawing upon established therapeutic models.  Specifically, to develop and implement preventative and reactive strategies for patients with challenging behaviour or behavioural disturbance at all stages of recovery, as a means of reducing the target behaviours.

• To provide specialist neuropsychological guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to a patient’s formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan with particular emphasis upon how patients’ cognitive/psychological problems may impair their ability to engage in rehabilitation.   

• To work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to develop and implement rehabilitation treatment plans that aim to restore independence and quality of life. 

This is a full time role working 37.5hrs per week with an attractive and competitive salary, dependent upon skills and experience.

Skills & Experience

• Training/CPD in clinical neuropsychology
• HCPC registered, Eligibility for Chartered Psychologist status and membership of the BPS Divisions of Neuropsychology and Clinical/Educational Psychology
• Eligibility for the BPS Specialist Register in Clinical Neuropsychology,
• Knowledge and experience practice in the area of neuropsychological rehabilitation
• Knowledge of theories of brain-behaviour relationships
• Research in the area of clinical neuropsychology
