An exciting opportunity exists for a Nurse Unit Manager to lead our Newborn Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH).

The RCH provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary care to children and young people and their families across Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia. The RCH is the designated statewide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. The hospital employs approximately 5,000 staff and has an annual budget of $620 million and operates out of a purpose-built, multi-award winning building. When it comes to training and research we partner with the very best. Our campus partners, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics.

Butterfly – Newborn Intensive Care at the RCH provides the best neonatal care for the most ill babies and infants from Victoria, interstate and overseas.  The Butterfly unit is a 35 bed Neonatal Intensive care unit and Special care nursery, flexing up at times of peak demand.  We are a level 6 facility that cares for approximately >1000 complex medical and surgical cases each year.

Babies admitted to Butterfly have a wide range of complex medical and surgical problems. Some require the support of a ventilator for their breathing and many require specialised surgical procedures.The management of our babies is overseen by a team of Neonatologists, Neonatal Nurses and Allied Health specialists. Particularly complex or long term patients are appointed a Nurse Coordinator to co-ordinate their care.

RCH offers registered nurses a rich program of education and continuing professional development. Every week there are multiple opportunities to engage in education and professional development both within the Butterfly ward and collectively with nurses from across the campus. These opportunities include formal teaching, simulation training, mentorship forums and opportunities to explore contemporary nursing issues with fellow nurses. In addition, RCH offers a generous program of continuing professional development funding, made possible through the RCH Foundation. This funding is available by application for nurses to travel to other centres, attend conference and participate in programs that support their achievement of goals determined within their annual performance development plan.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Extensive experience in nursing leadership roles
  • Evidence of on-going professional development as reflected in Professional Practice Portfolio
  • Post Graduate qualification in intensive care nursing (desirable)
  • Previous paediatric experience (desirable)
