Embassy London’s Health Unit (HU) serves the primary care health needs of the diplomatic staff posted to the United Kingdom. It also is the medical evacuation center for diplomats posted to the Middle East, Eastern Europe, central Asia, and Northern Africa. The HU mission is to “promote and protect the health and well-being of the American diplomatic community”. Our medical providers are a highly valued and integral part of the HU.

Do you flourish when working independently and under pressure? No day is the same for our busy Medical team. The U.S. Embassy in London is searching for a new team member who is a self-starter and genuinely passionate about their job as a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant (NP/PA).

We’re looking for a professional who has exceptional patient care and interpersonal skills. In this role, you will provide a broad range of primary health care from minor complaints (e.g. colds, muscles aches, minor injuries) to serious medical conditions (e.g. chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease) and/or major injuries that require hospitalization or emergency room (A&E) evaluations. The primary care aspects of this position include but are not limited to: physical assessment, diagnosis, prescription writing, initial treatment or appropriate referral. This position encompasses:

  • Providing primary care to patients ranging from infants to adults including well-woman  exams.
  • ·Managing and maintaining the immunization program for children and adult patients.
  • Providing pre-travel screening and counselling for travellers covering immunizations, malaria prevention, prophylactic counselling and safety precautions.
  • Performing procedures such as pap smears, suturing, excision of simple skin lesions, incision and drainage of abscesses.
  • Managing chronic medical problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma to include consultations, ordering tests, and prescribing appropriate medications.
  • When appropriate, referring a patient to outside medical providers for more advanced care.
  • Developing and maintaining a referral network of local physicians, specialists, clinics, hospitals and laboratories.
  • Conducting educational presentations to mission staff on topics such as disease prevention and health promotion.
  • Providing occupational medical services to Locally Employed Staff.
  • Participating in the medical officer on-call duty schedule, approximately one week in four. This requires on-call availability after regular work hours to include night, weekends, and holidays.

EDUCATION:

Nurse Practitioner: Must have completed a recognized and accredited Master's level Nurse Practitioner program and must hold and maintain a valid licensure and current certification(s) in the respective curriculum within the host country, country of citizenship, or the U.S. At the time of application for the position, must be certified and registered with relevant UK entities to legally practice in the UK, including having the ability to prescribe medication and order medical tests.

Physician Assistant: Must have completed a Bachelor level Physician Assistant program and must hold and maintain a valid licensure and current certification(s) in the respective curriculum within the host country, country of citizenship, or the U.S. At the time of application 

for the position, must be certified and registered with relevant UK entities to legally practice in the UK, including having the ability to prescribe medication and order medical tests.

EXPERIENCE:

Nurse Practitioner: Clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a primary or urgent care setting with at least 50% of their time spent in clinical care situations is required. At the time of application for the position, must be certified and registered with relevant UK entities to legally practice in the UK, including having the ability to prescribe medication and order medical tests.

Physician Assistant: Clinical experience as a Physician Assistant in a primary or urgent care setting with at least 50% of their time spent in clinical care situations is required. At the time of application for the position, must be certified and registered with relevant UK entities to legally practice in the UK, including having the ability to prescribe medication and order medical tests.

LANGUAGE:

English level IV (Fluent) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

Incumbent must be a skilled and experienced clinician with excellent working knowledge of all aspects of clinical medicine. Must recognize and understand the challenges of delivery health care to a large and diverse population including family members. Incumbent must quickly gain on-the-job knowledge of the local health care system and mechanisms of successful interactions with the system.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The incumbent must possess the ability to objectively analyze patient problems, utilize competent decision-making skills, and apply sound judgment in assessing possible solutions. Must possess a high degree of integrity, decisiveness and fairness in order to equitably apply regulations and policies of the medical program. Must be sensitive to the needs and perspective of others and be approachable. Maturity, stability, objectivity, resourcefulness, adaptability and sound professional judgment are essential.
