Break into prison healthcare!

HMP Long Lartin is a Category A and B dispersal prison holding up to 625 sentenced prisoners. There is an 8 bedded inpatient unit and existing on site pharmacy.

Working in the high secure environment can be challenging but also rewarding, interesting and stimulating. Working within the high secure environment will develop your clinical, professional and personal strengths. We provide a variety of healthcare interventions to the men in the establishment. Some of the work includes Inpatient and outpatient nursing, triaging of our patients if unwell or following an injury. Management of long term conditions, acute and chronic wound management and immunisations and vaccinations programmes. Additionally to this we also offer access to General practitioners, Opticians, physiotherapists, Dentists, Long term condition clinics, drug and alcohol services plus many more. If you are interested in every day being different, working in a secure estate with a complex population may suit you.

About the job:

Nursing in a high security prison is never dull or predictable. On any given day the skills you use may be similar to those you need working in health promotion or A&E, alternatively you may be supporting people to manage their mental health or substance misuse. It’s this variety that keeps things fresh and stimulating. Every day will bring new challenges and new experiences. But at the same time, you’ll have all the support you need to deliver the best care possible.

The role will be an experience like no other, requiring diverse and mixed nursing skills and background. One minute you could be delivering a nurse led clinic and the next you are attending an emergency response.

You can expect to be involved in everything from clinical triage, suturing, wound care and fracture clinics to the evaluation and development of patient care and standards. You’ll carry out – and potentially develop – nurse-led clinics, reviewing patient histories, undertaking relevant examinations and tests, organising any necessary treatment and referring patients to other healthcare professionals when you need to.

Further job information:

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours a week on a rota basis across 7 days. Part-time also considered. The salary for this role is up to £31,000 - dependent on experience (pro-rata for part-time).

Due to the nature of the establishment, employment is subject to receipt of satisfactory references, enhanced DBS check and prison vetting including Counter Terrorism Check.

About us:

Care UK are the Health in Justice Market leader, providing healthcare services to over 22,000 offenders in over 30 prisons across the country. Our model of care is our Wellbeing Approach – an integrated, comprehensive approach in recognition of the fact prisoners are a socially-excluded group with healthcare needs which are complex and often associated with poor outcomes. It adopts the premise no single health/wellbeing factor can be taken in isolation of other motivational issues which might impact a person’s care.

You will be a qualified Registered Nurse (Adult) with a real passion for developing your clinical skills in an environment that is ever changing. The right candidate will be enthusiastic with good assertive, communication skills. The ability to work well as part of a team is essential in the high secure environment.

If you are self-motivated and able to work autonomously as well as showing plenty of initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations, then this could be the right role for you!
We are looking for Nurses that have the ability to make decisions, ensuring our patients have access to healthcare equitable to the community and putting the needs of our patients first.
