Job Details

Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing

School of Health and Human Sciences

The School of Health and Human Sciences has an excellent reputation for teaching and research in health and social care.  Established in 2003 it is the newest department at the University and with its continued growth one of the largest (over 1200 students). Our academic members of staff (approx. 100) include nurses, other health care professionals, social workers, psychologists and sociologists.  The School is run over 2 campuses, based at Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.

In October 2015 we were awarded a bronze Athena SWAN award which recognises the commitment the School has toward equality and development of an inclusive culture promoting dignity and respect.  These are, of course, qualities that are also endorsed by the values of the NHS constitution with which all staff and students engage.  We welcome the appointment of a new Professor in Social Work to develop and enhance these values.

We are now seeking to appoint a full-time Senior Lecturer in the area of Adult Nursing.  The successful candidate will be expected to deliver excellent research and teaching, generate research income, to contribute to the administration and management of the School, and to the local, regional and international profile of the School.

This Lecturer role has a research specialism in long term conditions and their management, or in a closely aligned area. Long term physical health conditions often overlap with the management of chronic mental health conditions, and it would be anticipated the successful candidate would be in a position to develop research in this area, drawing from, and building upon, existing research expertise within the school. Applicants should be prepared to research and teach in a multidisciplinary environment and will have a strong commitment to education and research in this area; to team working; and to enhancing the contribution of research and education to Adult Nursing. They will join one of our research groups, (e.g. Mental Health and Psychological Wellbeing, Research for Patient and Public Benefit, Social Policy and Social Care, or Health Professions Education and Workforce Development). Working across groups is actively encouraged.

The post also includes programme leadership for our Adult Nursing courses at Colchester campus (These are run at UG and PG level).  This will require management and administration and some supervision, support and assessment and teaching of students on our existing modules, and generally enhancing our research-led teaching in Nursing.  We have a high reputation for our innovative educational delivery of Nursing programmes (ranked 12th in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction, joint 1st for Employability in the Times Good University Guide, and ranked green in the Health Education East of England Quality Insurance and Performance Framework exercise).

You should have a PhD in Nursing or related discipline; or the expectation of a PhD qualification prior to the start of the appointment and recognition as a Teacher/ Practice Teacher on the NMC register.

You should also have proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education in imaginative, engaging and innovative ways.

The successful candidate will provide evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.

We aim for excellence in research as well as in education and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both.
