Job Description

As deputy to the sister/charge nurse the senior staff nurse is instrumental in ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are delivered. To be an advocate for the patient, working within the multidisciplinary team. Day to day smooth running of the unit working together with other clinical areas to ensure safe patient flow. Provide effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team. Ensure high levels of professional behaviour are adhered to at all times. To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder's primary post will be within the Paediatric unit

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To be a clinical expert within the specialty
  • To ensure the provision of excellent, evidence based nursing care for the children and their families.
  • Ensure that each child is assessed, and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the family, and that this is accurately documented.
  • Promote Family Centred Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for the children and their families.
  • To act as an advocate for the child and family ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • To develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care.
  • To be competent in the administration of medication.
  • To actively manage department on a daily basis, ensuring skill mix appropriate and planning ahead.
  • Communicate effectively, promoting open and trusting relationships.
  • To be aware of the uses, safety precautions and handling of equipment in the department.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new equipment introduced to the department.

Skills & Experience

  • NMC Registered Nurse (RN Child / RSCN)
  • Assessing & Mentoring qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies
  • Relevant courses / experience in paediatric cardiology, oncology, neurology, hepatology.
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Administration of IV drugs.
  • Administering medication according to HCA Medication Policy
  • Significant post registration experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children.
  • Experience of supervising and assessing students.
  • Previous experience in the relevant specialty.
  • Previous ward management experience.
  • Teaching, supervision and managerial experience.
  • Experience of coordinating and managing patient care.
