An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist based within our Oncology Unit. This development post has been initially sponsored post by Jersey Cancer Relief for a period of 2 years.

The appointee will be an enthusiastic, forward thinking nurse who passionately wants to provide specialist support for Lung Cancer patients and their families.

The appointee will be expected to support the Respiratory and Oncology consultants to contribute to the strategic direction and delivery of a quality service to patients with lung malignancies.

The appointee will work collaboratively with referring GPs and all members of the extended multidisciplinary team including; imaging departments, medical and surgical consultants, clinical nurse specialists, acute oncology, specialist palliative care, ward nursing teams and administrative teams, to enhance communication across both professional and organisational boundaries (including UK) in order to ensure coordinated patient care.

Working as a key member of the lung cancer multidisciplinary team, the appointee will be expected to help organise and partake in the Lung MDT and support the team in the co-ordination of on-going patient care and follow up to ensure a seamless service for patients. 

The appointee will provide expert information, education and support patients and to their relatives/carers ensuring rapid access to advice, treatment and the implementation of individual care plans as a clinical priority. Much of the work of the Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist will be based in Medical Outpatients delivering nurse-led clinics and in the review of patients admitted to the ward.

As well as acting as a contact point and educational resource for all healthcare professionals (hospital and community-based) in delivering current best practice for our patients with lung cancer. The appointee will be expected to maintain high standards of nursing care coupled with involvement in continuous quality improvement and development of the Lung Cancer Service, whilst ensuring professionalism is maintained at all times. The appointee will be committed to ensuring patient safety, privacy and dignity by being motivated, caring and wanting to make a difference to the patient’s experience with a positive attitude.

This role requires the individual to work well as a team but also as an autonomous practitioner. The ability to deal with challenging and difficult situations is essential. If you are looking for a challenge then this role could be the right role for you! You will need to have a minimum of 5 years post registration experience. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Oncology/Palliative Care is essential. Excellent communication skills and sensitivity necessary to support patients is absolute. Educated to degree level and working towards a post graduate qualification is also a pre-requisite for this post, along with a recognised teaching or mentorship qualification. Holding a Non-Medical Prescribers certificate would be desirable.

As this is a development post, support will be given in regard to advancement of knowledge and skills relative to respiratory/lung cancer care The post holder must be prepared to undertake further studies as required and have a willingness to go off island to engage with UK providers as necessary for networking, and support the co-ordination of patient care following their repatriation back to Jersey after radiotherapy or surgery on the mainland.
