PART-TIME SCHOOL NURSE - GODALMING, SURREY

Our client is a wonderful school with four centuries of history behind it, but also one committed to being at the forefront of educational progress in the twenty-first century. Founded in 1611, the School moved to its present magnificent 250 acre site near Godalming, Surrey in 1872.

A vacancy exists for a School Staff Nurse to work as part of a rota'd team of nurses to provide clinically effective, high quality service nursing care to boarding/day pupils and staff registered with The Mill Medical Practice; and first aid care to all members of the School community. The hours will include one overnight shift per week and one weekend in six. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic experienced and flexible individual to join their dedicated and friendly professional team. A competitive pro-rata rate of pay is on offer commensurate with this important term-time only role.

2 - Main Duties

Nursing
Provide a high standard of service within NMC guidelines to pupils, members of staff and any visitors while on site. This will include:

sorganisation and running of daily surgeries during space of duty
sprovision of first aid and emergency care and treatment as necessary
smanagement of the immediate care of pupils with sports injuries
sprovision of a confidential listening and health advice service as appropriate
sfollowing good practice and specific directives on immunization procedures relevant to the School population and individuals
sdeliver routine booster and travel vaccination clinics
soperation of procedures for control of infectious diseases
sfollowing procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste
sbe aware of and following recommended procedures for safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs
smaintaining treatment room stocks, hygiene and tidiness
sorganisation of doctor's surgeries, including advising pupils to attend and referring to the School's Medical Officer as appropriate
sarranging for boarding pupils to attend any emergency medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary
sassessment, implementation and evaluation of in-patient care admitted to Hunt Health Centre.

Health Education
ssupporting health education throughout the School population
skeeping up to date with current health promotion initiatives
scontributing to the programme of first aid and clinical development for boarding house matrons.

Administration
smaintenance of medical records - accurately, confidentially and safely
skeeping nursing records to a high standard enabling the accurate and rapid retrieval of information
srecording dispensing of drugs following drugs protocols
smaintaining general office procedures.

Health and Safety
sbeing involved and aware of health and safety issues within the School affecting staff, pupils or the environment
skeeping records of reported accidents.

Liaison
sworking closely with other members of Hunt Health Centre to ensure seamless and continuous care, and with parents, Housemasters and Matrons, other academic and support staff as necessary.
sliaising with nominated boarding house matrons (up to 2) as their primary point of contact for the pupils in those houses.

3 - Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities

When on duty, supervision and support of on-duty Health Centre Assistant. Responsible for the overall functioning of Hunt Health Centre when Senior Nurse is absent.

4 - Other Responsibilities - money, equipment, materials etc

Purchase of medical and general supplies within a pre-agreed budget.

5 - Knowledge and Skills Required

Relevant Experience/Knowledge & Technical Competencies

ESSENTIAL

Evidence of continuous professional development
IT literate, with a willingness to develop using new technology (we are on a computer link to the main surgery EMIS system; a large part of the communication around the school happens by email on the school intranet)
Sound organizational and administrative skills

DESIRABLE

A track record of working within Accident & Emergency, School Nursing and/or Primary Health Care, and/or Mental Health
Expertise in dealing with sports injuries, minor trauma, problems of adolescence and chronic disease management (eg. asthma, eczema, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies)
Experience of working with teenagers
Expertise in administering vaccinations, or a willingness to undertake training to do so
Evidence of professional development in First Aid/CPR etc

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL

Registered nurse on the NMC register with relevant post-registration experience
Able to read, speak and write English accurately and clearly

DESIRABLE

Current First Aid certificate
