SENIOR MATRON - OXFORD
Competitive salary - term-time only

Our client, founded in 1480, is one of the country's leading independent day schools. It is situated in an enviable location at the heart of Oxford beside the River Cherwell.

The School is seeking to appoint a Senior Matron to supervise its Medical Centre from September onwards. The successful applicant will be a Registered Nurse, able to demonstrate significant nursing experience with a particular interest in adolescence related health matters and capable of providing advice on sensitive issues. It is essential that the candidate has an empathetic, cheerful, calm and sensible approach with the ability to make important decisions and inspire confidence in young people as well as parents and colleagues. It is anticipated that the post holder, working closely with the Junior Matron, will form a dedicated, flexible and enthusiastic team, covering the Medical Centre during the core hours of 7.30am to 6pm, sharing the earlier and later sessions. The role is full-time (38.75 hours per week), term-time only with some weekend working as required for School events and sports fixtures. A competitive salary is on offer commensurate with this important role.

Key Responsibilities
·Assess and prioritise first aid and medical issues presented by pupils, staff or visitors to the School and treat in line with accepted good practice and according to protocol where necessary
·Provide a confidential caring service, working within child protection guidelines
·Ensure that all documentation regarding any accident or incident on School premises, including the details of any first aid treatment given, is recorded in an accurate and contemporaneous manner
·Ensure that any medication given to pupils in School is stored, administered and documented according to legislation and protocol
·Monitor the expiration dates of any medicine supplied to the School by a parent, and request replacement when necessary and within a suitable time frame
·Give all pupils the opportunity to discuss health or welfare issues in private
·Provide first aid support for sporting events held on School playing fields according to a rota; this will include some Saturday working
·Inform staff and parents of any outbreaks of illness or infection and advise on prevention and management
·Implement adequate infection control measures throughout the School and promote the importance of good hygiene practices amongst pupils and staff
·Maintain treatment room hygiene
·Monitor on a regular basis all first aid supplies and emergency equipment across departments, restocking and replenishing items when necessary
·Follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste
·Prepare and maintain school health care plans for pupils with chronic medical conditions and ensure that appropriate staff are made aware of the support and emergency treatment that pupils with medical/chronic conditions require
·Prepare medical bags for school trips, games afternoons and sporting fixtures, ensuring that any medication held in school for pupils is taken by the member of staff in charge should it be required in the event of an emergency
·Provide training to staff in the management of common issues such as allergies and asthma or any other medical condition deemed necessary for staff to have an awareness of
·Arrange for pupils in the relevant age groups to be offered immunisations in accordance with national guidelines and in conjunction with appropriate external agencies
·Arrange first aid training for staff as necessary, identifying potential participants and updating the training database
·Attend health and safety meetings
·Contribute to the development, implementation and review of policies relevant to the health and welfare of pupils
·Coordination and management of an annual staff flu clinic
·Maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for the School at all times
·Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development by undertaking suitable training and self-directed learning as appropriate. Funding for such CPD will be available.
·Collate and present statistical information as required
·Organise and maintain paper and electronic files
·Attend staff Inset days
·Arrange bank cover as necessary
·Liaise with other health care providers as required
Transporting pupils to hospital is sometimes required, therefore a full driving licence and own transport are essential.
