This role is within The Children's Hospital which covers The Harley Street Clinic and The Portland Hospital. It is based in the acute inpatient paediatric unit at The Harley Street Clinic which specialises in Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Oncology, Spinal Surgery, Neurosurgery, general surgery and ENT.


Job Description

The Day Case Sister is one of a team of sisters supporting children's acute ward care led by the Senior Sister. The Day Case Sister will be primarily based within the day case Oncology Service at The Harley Street Clinic, and in addition with the Haematology CNS will support ward staff in the care of inpatients with haematological disorders. We are redeveloping our Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and the post holder will be responsible for the day to management of the service when the unit is open. From time to time the post holder will be responsible for shift management of the children's ward in or out of hours, to ensure the service is safely managed.

This is a full time position : 37.50 hours per week

Salary between £39174 and £45419 plus HCA Benefits

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The post holder, in the absence of the Senior Sister, has management responsibility for all beds in the unit with which the post is contracted to.
  • The patient group consists of children requiring a variety of Oncology interventions and with a variable level of dependency from acute to palliative.
  • Provide excellent care to children admitted to the oncology day case unit, and ensure all follow up arrangements are robust.
  • Manage the day to day nursing activities of the BMT unit when open.
  • Act as expert resource to nurses caring for inpatients with haematology disorders, and support delivery of high quality care to patients and families as required.
  • Work in close partnership with the paediatric haematology CNS and paediatric oncology CNS to ensure patient pathways are well managed.
  • Other key staff with which the post holder will interact includes: - Consultants / Social Services /Finance / Allied Health Professionals/pharmacy/ Support Services / Health and Safety and Risk Management.
  • The post holder is not responsible for managing the budget but needs to be aware of the resources available and the need to work within the financial envelope.
  • The post holder will have junior staff/learners reporting to them on patient care.
  • The post holder will supervise and/or mentor junior members of staff, learners, patients, families and carers.
  • The assessment, planning and delivery of high quality patient and family centred care, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, delegating tasks as appropriate
  • To effectively provide leadership to and manage a team of nursing staff, and other professional staff in the team as required.

  • NMC registered RSCN/RCN
  • First line management course
  • General experience across Paediatric environments
  • Excellent Oncology clinical skills
  • Relevant specialist skills and abilities for the department e.g. Oncology/Chemotherapy
  • Post graduate qualifications relevant to the role
  • PILS/ Paediatric care course
  • Effective managerial, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Effective teaching, training and preceptorship skills.
  • Able to motivate and develop a team of staff.
  • Able to problem solve and initiate change.
  • Extensive experience administering IV drugs, including chemotherapy and intrathecal drugs.
