The Harley Street Clinic is now planning the opening of their Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (PBMT) for children and young people. The four bedded unit will treat a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematology conditions in children and young people who require blood and marrow transplantation, as well as provide autologous transplantation for specific oncology disorders. The unit will be supported by a multidisciplinary team to provide a seamless service to children and their families and you will have the opportunity to work with some of the leading paediatric haematology Consultants.


Job Description

The Staff Nurse in Paediatric BMT will work as a skilled member of the nursing team, providing a high standard of holistic family centred care to the children and their families.

This is a full-time position

Salary between £31,630 and £35,822 (plus enhancements & benefits)

Shift patterns: TBC

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children and their families across the BMT and Oncology unit.
  • Plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity.
  • Achieve and maintain clinical competency in the nursing care of patients who receive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and undergo autologous and allogeneic transplants
  • Achieve and maintain competency in the care and management of central venous access devices
  • Recognise, react and appropriately manage haematological and oncological emergencies, reporting these appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the children and their families.
  • Act as an advocate for the child and family, providing them with information and support and directing them to the relevant support services where appropriate.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Identify any Safeguarding issues and manage these effectively, escalating as necessary
  • Start planning discharges from admission, liasing with the multidisciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care.
  • To be competent in the administration of medication.
  • To support members of the ward team and ensure that all patients receive appropriate care acting as a role model at all times
  • To work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team. To ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that multidisciplinary team members including Consultants are informed of changes in the patient's condition.

Skills & Experience

  • NMC Registered Nurse (RN Adult / RN Child / RSCN)
  • Assessing & Mentoring qualification
  • Relevant courses / experience in paediatric nursing
  • Safeguarding Level 3 course
  • PILS course
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies
  • Administration of IV drugs
  • Experience of supervising and assessing students
  • Previous experience within a PBMT unit
