The Harley Street Clinic is now planning the opening of their Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant unit (PBMT) for children and young people. The four bedded unit will treat a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematology conditions in children and young people who require blood and marrow transplantation, as well as provide autologous transplantation for specific oncology disorders. The unit will be supported by a multidisciplinary team to provide a seamless service to children and their families and you will have the opportunity to work with some of the leading paediatric haematology Consultants.

Job Description

The role of the Senior Staff Nurse will be to provide clinical leadership to the team and ensure the provision of high quality nursing care to children and their families, acting as a role model for staff members as an expert clinical practitioner in haematology.

This is a full time position: 37.50 hours per week

The projected salary range is between £35,673 and £40,401 plus HCA benefits

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To provide clinical expertise within the field of paediatric bone marrow and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)
  • Awareness of and competence in the management of haematological emergencies
  • To have a clear understanding of the accreditation and regulation required when working within the field of paediatric bone marrow and HSCT and promote adherence to this at all times
  • Ensure the provision of excellent, evidence based nursing care for the children and their families.
  • Ensure that each child is assessed, and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the family, and that this is accurately documented.
  • Promote Family Centred Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for the children and their families.
  • Act as an advocate for the child and family ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • Awareness of the patient pathway for patients undergoing bone marrow / HSCT and ensure engagement with the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver a holistic approach to patient care
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care.
  • Competent in the administration of medication, systemic anti-cancer therapy and HSC and/or bone marrow infusions
  • To be familiar with the National and International protocols for the treatment of haematology disorders including both malignant and non-malignant disorders.
  • Competent in the care and maintenance of central venous access devices
  • Actively manage the department on a daily basis, ensuring skill mix appropriate and planning ahead.
  • Identify Safeguarding issues and manage these effectively
  • Ensure infection control and prevention policies are adhered to at all time's working in close liaison with the Infection Control Team.
  • Communicate effectively, promoting open and trusting relationships.
  • Awareness of the uses, safety precautions and handling of equipment in the department.
  • Awareness of the precautions that must be taken by staff when handling and administering HSC / bone marrow infusions and systemic anti-cancer therapy.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new equipment introduced to the department
  • Manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skill mix of staff for patient dependency, utilisation of time and equipment, authorisation of bank/agency time sheets as appropriate, appropriate charging to patients.
  • Assist in ensuring the safety of the department, and the risk management process by actively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues, including the managing and reporting of incidents and response to complaints as required
  • Lead and co-ordinate team projects and team building activities.
  • Contribute to the appraisal process, and if required disciplinary activities.
  • Deputise for the senior staff in their absence or when requested.
  • Participate in events or publications that promote The Harley Street Clinic and Children's Hospital and children's nursing.

Skills & Experience

  • NMC Registered Nurse (RN Child / RSCN)
  • Assessing & Mentoring qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies
  • Relevant courses / experience in paediatric bone marrow transplant nursing
  • Leadership or management training
  • Basic Life Support training
  • APLS/EPLS.
  • Safeguarding Level 3 course
  • 2 years or more post basic experience on an acute transplant unit
  • Effective managerial, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Administration of IV drugs.
  • Phlebotomy and insertion of IV lines
  • Central venous access management
