The Portland Hospital for Women and Children specialises in maternity and women's health care, and a wide range of general and specialist care to children, including urgent care, supported by a 7 bed PICU.



Job Description

The Harley Street Clinic has a well-established haematology/oncology service and due to the growth of the service has created the new role of Paediatric Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist / BMT Co-Ordinator. The Harley Street Clinic is planning the opening of their paediatric BMT unit for children and young people. The four bedded unit will treat a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematology conditions in children and young people who require blood and marrow transplantation, as well as provide autologous transplantation for specific oncology disorders. The unit will be supported by a multidisciplinary team to provide a seamless service to children and their families and you will have the opportunity to work with some of the country's leading paediatric haematology Consultants.

Salary between £39,174 and £45,419 plus HCA Benefits

Working hours 37.5 per week, Monday - Friday (some flexibility required)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The post holder will work closely with the Medical Associate Specialist on the inpatient areas, to deliver a seamless service
  • Work across the wards and outpatient department ensuring a seamless pathway of care for all haematology and BMT patients
  • Ensure that each child has a named lead consultant to coordinate their care and ensure a smooth ongoing journey through effective discharge planning.
  • Be present at outpatient clinics for haematology patients to maintain continuity of care and assist in the smooth transition of communication between child, family and the clinical teams
  • Liaise and communicate with the BMT programme director and the patients Consultant to ensure a safe and seamless delivery of care
  • Be responsible for organising and co-ordinating the necessary investigations to work-up a patient requiring a bone marrow transplant and drafting and making the necessary arrangements for the BMT protocol.
  • Be responsible for organising the relevant investigations and if necessary liaise with external agencies for the identification of the donor, source of stem cells and co-ordinate this with the BMT protocol
  • Work in conjunction with the day unit sister who has a support role to all haematology inpatients to ensure seamless care is delivered to children and their families
  • Be an expert practitioner, knowledgeable and visible within paediatric haematology and BMT ensuring the provision of excellent, evidence based nursing care for the children and their families.
  • To be the key worker for the child and family acting as an advocate ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • Ensure that each child is assessed, and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the family, and that this is accurately documented.
  • Liaise with clinical, non-clinical and facilities staff in order to maintain a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for the children, families, visitors and staff.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Co-ordinate the care of the BMT patient during the period of immunosuppression post-transplantation and survivorship programme
  • Ensure effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team, other hospital departments, relatives and visitors for haematology / BMT patients.
  • Ensure effective communication with shared care facilities and external agencies
  • Maintain expert clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care.
  • Work closely with the Infection Control team to ensure that infection control and prevention policies are adhered to at all times within the departments
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of the uses, safety precautions and handling of chemotherapy treatment following hospital policy and national guidance at all times.
  • Assist the medical staff in any necessary procedures/treatments of haematology and BMT patients.

Skills & Experience

  • NMC Registered Nurse (RN Child / RSCN)
  • Post Registration Degree relevant to the field of paediatric cancer care
  • Assessing & Mentoring qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies
  • Leadership or management training
  • Basic Life Support training
  • APLS/EPLS
  • Safeguarding level 3 course
  • Relevant specialist skills and abilities for Ward BMT experience
  • Competent in the administration of IV and oral chemotherapy
