London Bridge Hospital achieved an ‘Outstanding’ accreditation by the healthcare regulators Care Quality Commission in 2017, with them remarking that they saw innovative practice throughout the hospital including new research taking place, and the Consultants and staff were noted as being highly motivated individuals, and all committed to providing high quality patient centred care.

Job Description

As a Senior Nurse Manager for the Orthopaedics Ward you will be responsible for providing overall clinical and professional leadership to the staff within the unit and will be accountable for all practice within the clinical area, ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of service to all stakeholders. In addition to this, you will help to identify any areas for growth and development within the ward, implementing and evaluating change using current research, audit and experience in line with business strategy.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a Senior Nurse Manager, your responsibilities will include:

Leadership/Management
 

  • Manage the department within an agreed budget including complying with the workforce planning objectives and units of service
  • Ensure patient environment meets expected standards within the department
  • Investigate incidents and complaints thoroughly, enabling the CEO/CNO to respond within the agreed timeframe
  • Deputising for or representing the deputy CNO or CNO whenever required
  • Devise and implement an annual service plan for the department that is clearly linked to the hospital business plan.
  • Respond appropriately to feedback from all key stakeholders and develop the ward/department as a business.
  • Responsibility for recruitment and retention of staff and provide departmental Human Resource guidance with support from the HR team
  • Offering clinical supervision to all staff as required.

Clinical
 

  • Demonstrate excellent clinical practice at all times and to be professionally accountable for own practice
  • Lead all nurses in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care
  • Act promptly and take appropriate action in medical emergencies
  • Responsibility for the maintenance of all equipment including the maintenance of service agreements
  • Responsibility for initiating the audit of clinical practice within the department and changing practice where appropriate.
  • Support all staff to maintain and develop their skills in compliance with an annual Learning and Development plan
  • Ensure that patient information is up to date and reflects current best practice.
  • Responsibility for ensuring all clinical staff complete and attend their annual mandatory training.
  • Maintain records of staff training and development activities.
  • Ensure representation from their department at the Clinical Practice Development Group and the Clinical Education Forum and any other forum pertinent to the clinical area

Skills & Experience

  • General Nurse, with current NMC registration
  • Significant post registration experience within Orthopaedics
  • Post basic qualification in clinical specialty relevant to practice area
  • Teaching and Assessing and/or Mentorship qualification is essential
  • Competent in Life support (ILS) is essential. ALS will be desirable
  • A management qualification is desirable
  • Previous experience gained within the private sector is desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrable time management, organisation and prioritisation skills

The successful candidate will have the ability to assess situations and identify the most appropriate approach to resolving it. They will have strong team building and leadership skills and will be able to engage professionally with all Hospital users. In addition to this, the post holder will possess strong customer care skills and will be able to tact and sensitivity towards patients
