Job Details

Ward A700 combines three major surgical specialties: Thoracics, maxillo-facial and ear-nose-and-throat (ENT) all in one newly built ward of the Bristol Royal Infirmary's newest addition. We provide expert, patient-focused care to patients post-operatively following a diverse range of surgical interventions. We also receive emergency admissions of patients with related problems, run outpatient clinics and take transfers from intensive care.

We offer a broad variety of clinical skills to develop such as care of tracheostomies, intercostal chest drains, laryngectomies, epidural analgesia and topical negative pressure wound closure. We are champions of Enhanced Recovery, putting patients at the centre of their care pathway, empowering them to take an active part in their own progress, both before and after surgery. Join our outstanding team and grow your competence in acute pain management, identifying and managing deteriorating patients and responding to airway emergencies as well as complex discharge planning, palliative care and physical rehabilitation.

New members of the team can expect the support of our committed, experienced staff nurses and nursing assistants, multiple clinical nurse specialists (CNS), the ward sister and our clinical practice educator. We provide a training programme on all the specialist aspects of our service. With regular placements on A700 there is plenty of opportunity to mentor and educate student nurses. Looking to the future, many of the skills and experience you can acquire on this ward are transferable to senior staff nurse posts within the division, CNS roles, advanced nurse practitioners, and other areas of the trust such as intensive care.

You will need to be flexible, adaptable, able to work under pressure and have a proactive approach to your own learning. This is an inpatient ward open 7 days a week and staff nurses are expected to work long days, night shifts and weekends.

We are keen to hear from applicants with existing surgical experience or experience in an acute setting.

Company

At UH Bristol we understand Nursing isn’t just a job – it’s a way of life. We give it our all, day after day, to provide our patients with the excellent standard of care they deserve. In return, we will give you the support, the development opportunities, and work-life balance, to help ensure you live your life as a Nurse to the full.

If you have first class Nursing skills, there aren’t many better places to use them than here in Bristol. We have invested in our hospital buildings; creating an environment that’s great to work in, and even better to be treated in. Our Nurses have the support of our Supervisory Ward Sisters, as well as great opportunities for rotation and development, while they benefit from a culture that respects and acts on their views.

We are extremely proud of our position as a major teaching and research hospital with strong links to the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, and with our excellent CQC (Care Quality Commission) assessment in March 2017, this makes University Hospitals Bristol one of only six large acute hospital Trusts in England to be rated ‘Outstanding’. A superb recognition of what makes our Trust so special – the respectful, caring and human approach we take to treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves.
