SHOT Operations Manager

Band 8b £47,092 - £58,217 pa

Manchester Blood Centre

Ref: 918-NX2979

Help us achieve safer transfusions for everyone.

The 4 UK Blood Services are the best in their field. From the administrative staff through to the nurses on the frontline and the researchers behind the scenes, they all work collaboratively to produce life-saving and life-enhancing solutions to patients who need organ and tissue transplants and blood transfusions.

The SHOT organisation (Serious Hazards of Transfusion) is ‘hosted’ by NHSBT in Manchester. As an independent professional haemovigilance scheme, SHOT’s dedicated team collect and analyse information on adverse incidents in transfusion laboratories and clinical areas that impact on patient safety in relation to treatment with blood components and provide advice on how these problems can be avoided in the future. Working with the Medical Director, as Operations Manager you will oversee this important work. Working with both hospitals and the Blood Services you will demonstrate strategic leadership as you plan major long-term haemovigilance initiatives that will ultimately affect practices in the UK and further afield in the EU. Taking responsibility for directing a team of 6 staff, you will see to it that SHOT reports and data achieve their full potential, with recommendations being developed into action plans that will ultimately benefit patients. As your strategies will be used to deliver training and support for medical staff, this is a far-reaching role in which you will be tasked with everything from ensuring our systems are integrated and highly efficient, to promoting the work of SHOT on an international scale.

Influencing transfusion practices, this is a unique opportunity for you to play your part in the ongoing success of this internationally renowned organisation. As such, you will have considerable experience in an acute hospital setting of blood transfusion practice, with a good current knowledge of scientific and clinical practice and the impact of adverse incident analysis. We will expect you to have an expert grasp of issues relating to haemovigilance including the audit cycle, clinical studies, clinical governance, risk management and NHS and EU quality initiatives. A natural leader, you will have good teaching and presenting skills and strong numerical capabilities including the ability to interpret complex data.  As you will be interacting with the Medical Directors and CEOs of all hospitals, plus other organisations such as HSIB and the CQC, you will also have outstanding communication and negotiation skills.

This is a unique opportunity to join SHOT at a high level where the wellbeing of the employee is crucial to the future of the business. We are committed to making sure our people are happy in their work, and as such, we offer a broad spectrum of training and development opportunities to ensure you are able to achieve your career ambitions. With a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, a strong culture of support and mentorship and a good work/life balance, there’s a good reason why SHOT employees are so proud to say they’re a member of our team.

Closing date: midnight 4th July 2018.
