Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Practitioner of Transfusion to join our Clinical Services Team on an 8 Months Fixed Term Contract to fulfil the role of Subject Matter Expert and utilise their extensive knowledge and skill base to provide specialist support relating to blood transfusion practices.

Reporting into the Director of Nursing Operations, the post-holder will have corporate responsibility to promote safe and appropriate transfusion across HCA Healthcare UK, work closely with the transfusion laboratory, clinical teams and the broader HCA community. They will have particular responsibility for managing the audit of transfusion practices and ensure compliance with all current and relevant legislation.

This is Full Time Post, 37.5 Hours a week Mon – Fri, there may be a requirement to wok the odd Saturday when there’s Consultant training however this time will be taken back in lieu.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of all transfusion training programmes to ensure transfusion practices are efficient and encompass safe, effective and appropriate use of blood and blood components
  • Contribute to the HCA Transfusion Committee and be a proactive member of the HCA facilities Transfusion Committees. (Patient Blood Management Committees)
  • Contribute to and comply with the governance and quality assurance processes of HCA, The Clinical Service Department and the wider regulatory and statuary bodies.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of HCA Transfusion policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist in investigation of transfusion related incidents and report them through the HCA Clinical Governance processes and where relevant to external bodies (e.g. SHOT, MHRA)
  • Audit transfusion practices within HCA and participate in National audits where applicable.
  • Provide expert advice and support to the medical and nursing staff in relation to blood transfusion.

Skills & Experience

  • Educated to degree level
  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist or NMC registered Nurse
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of Blood Transfusion processes
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Relevant Teaching qualification such as AET, PGCE etc.
  • Extensive post registration experience in transfusion
  • Excellent understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Strong IT and computer skills including experience of Pathology IT systems
