We currently have a vacancy for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to work within our state of the art Facilities within the Breast CNS Team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed professional who is already an experienced   nurse working with breast cancer patients (either within surgery or oncology).

Job Description

We facilitate high quality specialist nursing care to all patients with breast cancer and their families and friends, from diagnosis, during treatment and after treatment, helping them to move forward. The Breast CNS also acts as a liaison to those who develop a recurrence or metastatic disease, supporting the metastatic breast CNS.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hrs pw (Mon-Fri)

As a clinical nurse specialist, you will also act as resource to other healthcare professionals on breast cancer treatments and supportive care issues.

• Care, support, provision of information, signposting and referral to other agencies for patients with breast cancer from diagnosis, through adjuvant and metastatic treatments.

• Liaising with the breast multidisciplinary team to ensure a seamless service.

• Facilitate nurse led clinics for Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs), patient f/u for discussion of treatments (e.g. breast reconstruction)

Duties & Responsibilities

• Places quality at the heart of practice by delivering evidence based individualised care, through holistic needs assessment, planning and evaluation of care.
• Acts as a Keyworker for a clinical caseload of breast patients and incorporates the responsibilities of the key worker role, working to coordinate care and provide easy access for on-going support for patients, in all clinical areas within the Trust and at home by telephone.
• Uses advanced communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care and support
• Attends MDT meetings and ensure all newly diagnosed patients are discussed.
• Acts as patient advocate where necessary.
• Assess people’s information needs and provides relevant information to meet those needs
• Enable people to access, identify, appraise and interpret information, to determine their own future.
• Provides clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across service boundaries including the medical, allied health professional and other members of the multidisciplinary teams involved in caring for patients with breast cancer.
• Leads the nursing contribution to service development, ensuring the pursuit of excellence in care.
• Is able to influence the patient care pathway, refers to other professionals, and sign-post patients to other agencies as appropriate.
• Influences and participates in development of policy and clinical guidelines internally and externally.
• Actively integrates theory and practice.
• Promote self-management through education and guided support enabling patients to move forward through our health and well-being course at the end of treatment.
• To liaise with Hospital Palliative Care, Community Palliative Care Nurses and local Hospices, GPs and other community health professionals.

Skills & Experience

Essential Qualifications: 

• Registered Nurse
• Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care, breast cancer or relevant subject (ENB 998, 237, diploma breast care nursing)
• Evidence of continued professional development
• Level 2 psychological skills training as per recognised course or working towards
• Advanced Communications Skills Training or working towards
• Recognised teaching qualification or working towards

Essential experience: 

• Minimum 3 years relevant post registration experience, at Band 6 or above, in cancer, breast care or palliative care
• Experience of teaching
• Highly developed specialist knowledge and experience
• Able to conduct reflective practice and participates in clinical supervision facilitated by a level 3 / 4 practitioner
• Experience of multi-professional working skills
• Ability to lead and influence change
