We are recruiting for a Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse to work in the Orthopaedics &General Surgery Ward

Job Description

Our 20 bedded inpatient service provides a comprehensive range of orthopaedics, acute surgical and medicine treatments to our patients. We specialise in caring for patients who have undergone complex and varied surgery in orthopaedics, gynaecology, dermatology, urology, colorectal, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and reconstructive surgery

As a member of the team, you will work across all inpatient treatments with leading-edge technology and supported by leading consultants from many of London’s top teaching hospitals, helping you to advance your development.

As the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will oversee the day to day running of the inpatient department working closely with the wider senior team to ensure a high standard of patient care at all times. You will plan bed allocations and rota to ensure there is cover for all patients and will allocate staff to patients. You will assist in the investigation of incidents and complaints. You will need to ensure paperwork is kept up to date to be able to discuss care plans with consultants. And finally you will oversee the development of all teams within the department.

This is a full time role working 37.5hrs per week (Monday to Saturday only days, mixture of Early shifts and Long Days)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate clinical credibility and advanced nursing practice when assessing the patient.
  • Continuously deliver plans of care, whilst taking into consideration consultant preferences, monitoring nursing outcomes and evaluating and adapting plans of care and reporting to the ward team/ medical staff / Matron as appropriate
  • Communicate with consultants and organise the transfer/discharge of patients
  • As shift leader guide junior staff and take overall responsibility for the assessment of patients and delivery of care plans by utilization of advanced skills.
  • Assist and support staff to attain their core clinical competencies and be part of the assessment process.
  • As team leader/ supervisor able to co-ordinate a group of nurse’s assessment over a period of time.
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of a deteriorating patient and initiate early interventions in a calm and co-ordinated manner. Take the lead in emergency situations and carry out evaluation of care post emergency care situations.
  • Advise other clinical areas/ departments with regards the needs of the critically ill patient/ acting as resource for ward areas.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring nursing procedures reflect evidence-based practice by continuously participating in the review of policies/ procedures/ protocols and guidelines.
  • To provide advice and information to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients without supervision, in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate patient centred care.  
  • To be responsible for the day to day shift co-ordination of the ward, providing nursing leadership, guidance, expert clinical advice and managerial skills.
  • To oversee care provided by registered and non-registered staff within their sphere of responsibility.
  • To review ‘work force planning’ and secure adequate cover from temporary staffing if required to ensure staffing levels are maintained to set staffing criteria.
  • Deal with complex situations and take appropriate action in emergency or unforeseen situations.
  • To promote a learning environment for post registration nurses by assessing training needs and working closely with the Matron to ensure these are met.
  • Maintain patient safety by complying with HCA Medication Policy, NMC and National Guidelines for medicines, blood and blood product administration; participate in clinical audit and ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrate and practice principles of infection control including universal precautions and initiate appropriate actions to isolate patients when necessary; participate in audit and ensure compliance. Educate more junior members of the team on any relevant aspects.
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of staff and departmental resources.
  • Ensures adequate and appropriate equipment is available to meet the patient and MDT requirements
  • Actively participates with the Head of Department in establishing/ setting unit departmental budgets and annual capital equipment budget
  • Reports defective equipment and ensures appropriate action is taken to ensure a safe environment
  • To be a resource for students and other junior colleagues, and assist in their development.

Skills & Experience

  • Registered General Nurse with NMC pin
  • Teaching and mentorship qualification
  • First line management course desirable
  • Advanced Life Support qualification desirable
  • Certificate, Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • Private patient experience
  • Evidence of Senior  level experience
  • Interest in research and audit
  • Surgical knowledge and senior experience caring for pre and post-operative patients
