Location: St Helena, South Atlantic Tropical Island

Salary: c£62,000 (depending on experience and including tax free International Supplement)

Description: This hospital is based on a sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500. St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. It’s now poised for transformation with the recent opening of a brand new international airport offering scheduled commercial air access. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

You will manage a small caseload of complex cases with a focus on child protection and safeguarding court work, a leading role in conjunction with other agencies, protecting vulnerable people with an emphasis on anti-oppressive practice.

You will chair strategy meetings and statutory/review meetings and deputise for the Team Manager when required. You must develop, monitor and review individual care plans based on assessed needs and risks that take account of diversity to maintain and improve their quality of life, advising social workers and mentoring Social Care Officers on improving care planning and case management. Reports and statements for court, case conferences and reviews must be prepared to a high standard and in time for deadlines. You will play a leading role in improving practice and quality of assessments and care planning by mentoring assigned social work staff, leading team discussions and workshops, updating on practice developments and research findings, as well as the induction of new staff.

Liaising with key agencies and partnering with other Safeguarding units including older persons and residential units, you may be required to work evenings, weekends and occasional public holidays and participate in the on call duty rota.

This is a two year fixed term contract!

Person Specification: A UK Qualified Social Worker CQSW or DipSW or equivalent, you must have a current registration with the Health Care Professionals Council or equivalent plus experience in social work with a focus on safeguarding children. Up to date knowledge and recent practical experience of working as a social worker with case load responsibility in safeguarding vulnerable groups will be essential. You will also need a full UK Driving Licence.
