Our cardiac services are led by some of the UK’s top heart consultants, and supported by a highly skilled team of cardiac physiologists, radiographers and specialist nurses, giving the hospital the reputation for providing one of the largest private cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical programmes in Europe.

Job Description

As a Principal Cardiac Physiologis the successful candidate will (but not be limited to):

  • To support the Cardiology Department Manager in the operational management and delivery of technical cardiology services efficiently and effectively, ensuring the smooth running of a quality invasive and non-invasive service to cardiac patients.
  • To deputise for the Cardiology Department Manager as required.
  • To provide professional leadership and direction for the technical service at the Wellington Hospital and manage the team of Cardiac Physiologists in the cardiology department
  • To support the team of Cardiac Physiologists in developing their professional skills and enable them to maximise their performance.
  • To provide highly specialist clinical and technical knowledge and skills in a broad range of cardiac physiological investigations and deliver expert care for patients undergoing diagnosis and treatment in the Cardiology Department.

This is a full time role working 37.5hrs per week – this includes flexibility with regards to working hours.

The attractive and competitive salary for this role starts at £45,754, increasing dependent upon skills and experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as a resource within the Technical Cardiology Service to provide expert and specialist advice to patients, colleagues and clinicians within this clinical area.
  • Perform a wide range of standard and complex or advanced procedures as requested by the clinician in at least two fields of Technical Cardiology eg. Catheter Lab, Pacing, EP, Echo, Stress testing and ambulatory monitoring and be involved in patient preparation for these tests.
  • Perform these procedures in a number of settings and sometimes under difficult or stressful conditions eg. ITU, PCU, Cath Lab, patient rooms, cardiology department
  • Follow departmental guidelines and protocols for each procedure relevant to the post ensuring quality control regarding e.g. imaging quality in Echo, reporting methods, pacemaker reprogramming, ECG recordings.
  • Analyse and interpret real time results, which may be complex and either urgent or routine in nature, and to communicate these findings to other relevant team members and cardiologist.
  • Respond to emergencies and carry out emergency defibrillation, resuscitation, temporary external and intracardiac pacing.
  • Assist with other provocative procedures as instructed by the clinician such as injection of contrast medium during echocardiography, VF induction during ICD implantation, intra cardiac pacing and ablation.
  • Act autonomously to deliver appropriate and individualised patient care at all times e.g. Anticipating the need for further investigations on the basis of findings from an echocardiogram or stress test, interrogating complex diagnostic data from pacemakers and ICDs carry out reprogramming to optimise pacing/therapeutic functions and clinical outcome.

Skills & Experience

  • Relevant professional qualification with the RCCP (Registered Clinical Physiologist)
  • BSE (British Society of Echocardiography) accreditation
  • Specialist Cardiac Physiologist experience in non-invasive cardiology with highly specialist knowledge of Echocardiography
