Our Paediatric wards hold 56 inpatient beds + 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced medical and surgical care, including a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which reflects the acuity and complex nature of the children who are admitted to our hospital. The Portland Hospital has a large number of international Paediatric patients, often funded by relevant embassies.

The Portland Hospital is the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK. The hospital provides for both consultant-led and midwifery-led deliveries, having an 18 bedded ward to facilitate this. Alongside this there is a 12 bedded Gynecology and Women’s Health in-patient ward. The Portland Hospital also has a large outpatient department for all areas of its clinical expertise, to facilitate continuous care or simpler procedures.

Job Description

To provide a highly specialist service to children who present with a range of complex communication and swallowing difficulties at the Portland Rehabilitation Unit.

To be responsible for providing highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and therapy packages including training and support for staff, parents and families in the implementation of treatment programmes.

Salary starting on £31,972 increasing depending upon experience with HCA benefits, working a full time 37.5hrs/week.

Duties & Responsibilities

•To identify, deliver and evaluate specialist assessments to support the differential diagnosis of a range of complex developmental and acquired speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties, including working with children with tracheostomy and the provision of videofluoroscopy examinations.
•To provide appropriate specialist intervention for complex communication and swallowing disorders and evaluate outcomes.
•To demonstrate well developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
•To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment seeking advice as appropriate.
•To develop clear care plans based on best practice and to use specialist knowledge to inform clinical judgments for case management.
•To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures.
•To use excellent communication skills and effective joint partnership working with the multidisciplinary team.
•To uphold professional standards of client care at all times. To adhere to National and Local professional codes of conduct

Skills & Experience

ESSENTIAL

  • Professional qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered member of HCPC
  • Independent in provision of a range of communication assessments and intervention approaches with paediatric patients aged 0 – 18 years-old in a range of clinical areas such as neurology, neurodevelopmental medicine, general paediatrics, and respiratory medicine.
  • Knowledge and experience with low and high technology alternative and augmentative communication systems
  • Experience working with children with feeding difficulties
  • Evidence of continuing professional development within paediatric clinical areas
  • Willingness to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to integrate national guidelines, polices and research into own clinical practice 

DESIREABLE

  • Registered member of RCSLT
  • Paediatric dysphagia competent
  • Experience working within acute and rehabilitation settings
  • Experience working with interpreters
  • Videofluoroscopy Swallowing Study competent
  • Experience in tracheostomy management
  • Experience in provision of staff training
