The London Hand and Wrist Unit (LHWU) specialises in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of all conditions relating to the hand and wrist. Hand surgeons from both plastic and orthopaedic backgrounds work closely with our hand therapy team to provide exceptional and comprehensive patient care. The London Hand and Wrist Unit has five sites across central London, including The Platinum Medical Centre, The Portland, London Bridge Hospital, The Lister and Chelsea Outpatients Clinic.

Job Description

The post holder will have a full caseload of patients from all the referring consultants. The post holder will also develop areas of responsibility within the department including tasks for quality improvement, operational efficiency and general administration. 

This is a full time position, 37.5 hours. The post holder will primarily be based at our Wellington and Chelsea locations, but will also be required to travel to our other sites as staffing needs dictate.

Duties & Responsibilties

  • To provide comprehensive and ongoing assessment for each patient.
  • To ensure the patient, their family and carers are involved in the planning and delivery of their own care. To ensure that patients are informed of the current procedure regarding key aspects of our service.
  • To maintain accurate, up to date and concise treatment records detailing individual patients’ treatment plans and progress using the Hand Therapy documentation system and adhere to the guidelines and standards recommended by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and/or College of Occupational Therapists.
  • To keep up-to date with current theory and practice in the field of hand therapy and ensure that the treatment offered is based on best clinical practice and research.
  • To oversee and support the professional teaching and development of staff as well as the quality of patient care.
  • To attend, and at times lead, appraisal and supervision sessions, in-service training programmes and staff meetings.
  • To take a lead role in the continuing strategic development of the therapy services for the LHWU and to take responsibility for related administrative, organisational and marketing activities.
  • To plan and oversee clinical audit initiatives.
  • To plan and monitor staffing needs
  • To support and maintain open channels of communication at all times with the Hand Unit Manager and with other members of the Hand Therapy Department and Multidisciplinary team.
  • To support and oversee compliance with Health and Safety, infection control and clinical risk management policies/procedures within the Unit.
  • To support staff in responding appropriately to untoward events and facilitate learning from near-misses and incidents.

Skills & Experiene

  • HPC Registration
  • Professional qualification in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy
  • Experience as a Senior Hand Therapist
  • Experience working in outpatient settings
  • Evidence of post graduate Hand therapy education (Desirable)
  • BAHT Level I or II Courses (Desirable)
  • Experience with static and dynamic Splinting (Desirable)
