Professional Development Nurse ‘Opt-Out’ – ODT

AfC Band 7 £33,222 - £43,041 pa

Contract: Fixed-Term 18 months

Location: To be agreed on appointment

The Government is supporting a change in the law on organ donation to move to an ‘opt-out’ system. The new donation system practiced in Wales, and proposed for England, Scotland, Jersey and the Isle of Man (and being considered in Guernsey) means the default legal position is one where adults are deemed or considered to want to be an organ donor. This historic change in the law has the aim of increasing the number of organ donors and organ transplants.

The law is expected to receive Royal Assent in February/March 2019 and will come into effect a year later, probably in April 2020.

Jointly, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), NHS England (NHSE), Health Departments of Scotland, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) will deliver the opt-out system

The Opt-Out Programme will deliver a range of projects that ensure that the policy and legislative changes are implemented successfully.

As a key member of the Nursing Team within Organ Donation and Transplantation, the post holder will play an essential role in helping design, develop, implement and facilitate bespoke education and training to help embed the ‘opt-out’ legislation in clinical practice. They will tailor the education and training to a wide stakeholder group, both internal and external to the organisation. For example; consent/authorisation training, Specialist Nurse- cohort training and regional collaboratives.

The post holder will act as an excellent role model demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge in the field of organ donation, providing high level expert advanced practice at a regional level through leadership, consultation, clinical advice, teaching, research and mentorship/support for healthcare staff. They will work collaboratively with NHSBT and external stakeholders to ensure the successful development and application of knowledge, research and skills across the patient / client pathway to achieve high quality clinical outcomes.

In conjunction with Opt-Out’ project team and the Professional Development Team, they will be responsible for creating education and training packages to introduce new clinical innovations and any change to procedures or practice required in the clinical area. Accountable for the implementation, facilitation and evaluation of packages at regional and national level to suit team, individual and national requirements.

The successful post-holder will also support existing coaching, mentoring and supervision arrangements within organ donation teams via support structures, advice and involvement in the induction, mentoring and training of staff working towards achievement of defined competencies.

Following monitoring and assessment of education and training; they will assess the impact and where necessary make the appropriate / additional changes required to sustain and enhance competency levels across organ donation teams.

They will participate and lead, where appropriate, specific projects developing strategies for service improvements that reflect clinical, professional and corporate objectives and act as facilitator in managing change, supported by Regional and Team Managers within ODT.

There is not an essential requirement for shadowing on-call staff over 24 hours, albeit role modelling/shadowing the consent process is desirable to help embed the legislation.

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice

Please note that this is fixed term for 18 months.

Closing date: 3rd March 2019.
