Job Details

Nova Scotia, Canada is looking for you!  Now accepting applications for Midwifery positions in Nova Scotia, Canada with Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and IWK Health Center:

We are fortunate to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the rolling sea, lush green forests, lakes and farmland. All of this, combined with our growing cities, makes Nova Scotia one of the most enjoyable places to live in Canada. Nova Scotia’s slow pace means families are able to spend more time together and participate in the many fun activities offered throughout the province. One of the first established areas in Canada, Nova Scotia has a diverse history of aboriginal, Celtic, Acadian, and African cultures that dates back hundreds of years and, in the case of the Mi’kmaw, thousands of years.

Our Midwives are responsible for the provision of safe, flexible primary care to women and their babies during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. As primary care providers Midwives may be the first point of entry to maternity services, and are fully responsible for clinical decisions and the management of care within their scope of practice. We provide care to women and newborns in a variety of settings such as in the client’s home, in community clinics and in hospitals in accordance with the Midwifery Model of Practice and the Standards of the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia.  Care is provided to the woman and her newborn until approximately six weeks postpartum along with facilitated continuity of access to care beyond the childbearing years, when necessary, through communication with other care providers or services.

Let’s review a few details about qualifying:

  • The Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia (MRCNS) is the regulatory authority for midwifery in the province. The MRCNS is responsible for registering and licensing Nova Scotia midwives and maintaining standards and policies for safe and ethical professional practice.  Successful International candidates will need to complete a competency assessment and bridging program to prepare for applying for registration.  We will provide support and guidance along the way.
  • Midwives need to drive to appointments and as such will need a valid driver’s licence from the UK temporarily and then a Nova Scotia driver’s licence as well as access to a vehicle.
  • New hires from outside of Canada will need to provide proof of education and this may include the UK equivalent of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) with intubation, and an Obstetrical Emergency Skills
  • We will value experience working with multicultural and vulnerable populations
  • Our Midwives must be able to work flexible hours according to patient needs and location of service for the provision of on-site clinical services, healthcare in patient homes/communities (as appropriate), hospital/clinic services, and on-call coverage.
  • It is a must to be physically able to perform the duties related to the position under varying weather and environmental conditions including heavy lifting, carrying equipment in and out of houses/buildings and up and down stairs.

Our remuneration:

$72,889 - $96,848 annually - full time positions

Our Midwives play a key role in making healthcare accessible to our communities.  We offer several benefits to ensure our team feels valued and compensated.   Our Midwives are employees of NSHA and IWK and as such are eligible for group health, dental, vision care and pension benefits.  In addition we can offer relocation and a signing bonus for out of province incumbents – up to $10K!
