Full time

Chester

Given the choice, wouldn’t you want to work here?

Life is full of choices. But some can be very difficult indeed. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) is a national charity that works closely with the NHS - we provide abortion and sexual healthcare services to women and men across the UK. We respect each individual’s right to choose and we never judge.

Our Chester clinic at BPAS has a fantastic opportunity for a Lead Nurse/Midwife to join their fast paced and dynamic team. The team at Chester are professional and committed, and endeavour to accomplish a high level of client care and confidentiality to all clients they see within their clinic.

This role would require you to work flexibly between Monday to Friday to meet the needs of the service, with occasional weekend working and be able to travel across the cluster to cover other units when required. Other units are based in Llandudno.

As a Lead Nurse/Midwife you will provide abortion and sexual health information, carry out pre-treatment assessment and treatment to clients in a supportive manner, in accordance with NMC Guidelines for Professional Practice, the Abortion Act 1967, the Health & Social Care Act 2008 and BPAS Policies & Procedures. You will thrive when managing a team of Nurses involved in the provision of the service at the unit, and will support the Unit Manager in daily tasks.

Key responsibilities:

  • Carry out point of care testing including pregnancy tests and venepuncture if necessary, and to give results to the clients.
  • Establish that the client is sure of her decision to request a termination and ensure that the reason complies with the terms of the Abortion Act.
  • Make arrangements for the admission of clients, notifying any specific requirements (medical or physical) where necessary and complete all referral documentation.
  • Carefully check for and implement any procedure indicated on Client Case Notes as appropriate, including administering medication for Medical Abortion procedures or cervical preparation.
  • Complete relevant paperwork and in the event of post treatment problems, make appropriate arrangements with the clinic or refer to an NHS agency if necessary.
  • Administer drugs according to BPAS policies and NMC rules and ensure the safe keeping of drugs at all times.
  • Maintain good communications within the area of responsibility and within all areas of the Unit to provide a unified approach to client care.

About you

You will be passionate about leading a team of nurses, and will continually coach and support them when needed. You will enjoy working as part of a busy team, and will build and maintain effective working relationships throughout the Unit in order to deliver a high quality of client care.

We are also looking for:

  • Registered Nurse Level 1/Registered Midwife with contraception, counselling and ultrasound scanning skills.
  • Knowledge of contraception, infection control, child protection, sexual health, abortion procedures and clinical guidelines, health and safety, COSHH requirements and the Abortion Act.
  • Gynaecological nursing experience or relevant specialty (i.e. sexual health or contraception).
  • Experience of nurse admissions and discharges, practice nursing, venepuncture, consent to treatment and supervisory skills.
  • Accurate administration skills, with good attention to detail whilst maintaining a professional manner at all times.
  • Team player, with the ability to work on own initiative and deliver a dedicated client led service.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills along with excellent listening skills.
