About the Role

The Cardiac Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be autonomous and expected to demonstrate a high level of practice in their direct care of patients. Their ability to plan and develop services will enhance staff engagement and cardiac services.  Key skills of leadership, innovation, mastery and clinical expertise will facilitate and deliver care which is patient centred, safe and effective.

The CNS will be a core member of the multidisciplinary care team (MDT) and through demonstration of these higher level skills will work collaboratively with clinicians and service managers.  Key aspects of the role is to promote, develop, review and redesign cardiac services which are responsive and relevant to patient’s needs.

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • To prescribe within scope of practice/area of competency
  • To follow locally approved clinical guidelines and NICE and prescribe within the formulary
  • To provide cost effective prescribing
  • To regularly review prescribing activity and implement change as necessary
  • To have prescribing activity audited as per the non-medical prescribing group
  • To work within the framework of the Corporate and local non-medical prescribing policies and procedures
  • Maintain competence with prescribing practices through Continuing Professional Development and the maintenance of a Personal Portfolio in accordance with the appropriate healthcare regulator.

Skills & Experience 

  • NMC Registered General Nurse (Post-basic Cardiac Qualification Desirable)
  • Evidence of Master’s Level learning or prepared to work towards
  • Registered with the appropriate healthcare regulator as a non-medical prescriber
  • Relevant Post-registration experience in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgical area at Band 6 or 7 level (Minimum of 3 years)
