Description of the role:
One Hatfield Hospital, Hertfordshire is looking for a high level Paediatric Healthcare Assistant. The role is part time, 20 hours per week. Experience in paediatrics is essential.
To assist the qualified paediatric nurses to care for children across all areas of the hospital including pre-assessment, day surgery and outpatients in line with national guidelines, hospital policies and best practice standards.
To oversee, along with the Lead Paediatric Nurse, play and distraction for children in hospital and support children in this capacity when undergoing surgery.
This role will also include some administrative duties.
Competent in phlebotomy for children and young people.
Work with the paediatric team to develop the service and enhance the care we provide to Children and Young People.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
Support paediatric nurses in the implementation of an agreed plan of care with the patient
Help promote and maintain a caring, supportive family centred environment focused on meeting the needs of the patient/relatives/carer, working collaboratively with other departments to achieve this
Look after the physical comfort of patients, for example helping them with activities of daily living.
Take basic observations such as blood pressure and temperature, height and weight, utilising the paediatric early warning score system as per hospital policy and escalate appropriately to the trained nurse
Listen and talk to patients, helping them to feel supported and safe
Assist with keeping the department clean and tidy, for example cleaning of equipment, adhering to infection prevention and control policy and hospital procedures at all times
Keep supplies and equipment in order, assisting in the maintenance of stock levels
Maintain contemporaneous patient records including patient pathways and the relevant IT reporting systems are up-to-date and accurate ensuring countersigned by a trained nurse.
Chaperone when required
Deal with any patient/relative complaints at the time if possible however escalate to appropriate member of staff if need be
Report complaints, compliments and untoward incidents via Datix as per hospital policy

Hours
Full time or part time hours per week, across a rotational six day shift pattern including evenings. Flexibility required.
Qualifications
Minimum G.C.S.E. education or equivalent
NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care, Care Certificate or equivalent preferred
Experience
Ability to learn and develop
Experience working with children in healthcare setting
Skills
Paediatric competencies for height, weight and vital signs
Caring, patient and customer focused
Experience in computer skills using MS Office Suite
Comprehensive written and verbal communication skills
Paediatric phlebotomy
Enthusiasm for cross functional working within different departments
Desirables
Competence in the following areas: paediatric phlebotomy.
Play/ distraction therapy experience.
