The General ICU offers the opportunity to work within a team and follow a fixed rota pattern consisting of both day and night shifts.  That rota can be adapted to meet the needs of the service and successful candidates who would prefer an adjusted shift pattern.

Location: General ICU, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen

Intensive Care in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is currently in a position to recruit Band 5 staff to join our highly dynamic, specialist and multi-disciplinary team to improve trauma and critical care; locally, regionally and nationally

In Autumn 2018, Aberdeen became the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and now plays a key role in leading the delivery of specialist trauma care.  The North of Scotland Major Trauma Centre, based in Aberdeen, is one of the largest health campuses in Europe and is now part of an inclusive and collaborative Trauma Network.

Working in Aberdeen’s ICU also affords the opportunity to train and work in the Hyperbaric Unit, the only category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber in Scotland.   We provide an elective service for a variety of conditions and a 24-hour emergency service to treat divers suffering from decompression illness (DCI).

Aberdeen General ICU formally became the only Scottish ECMO centre in early 2020.  The ECMO service is delivered by a dedicated multi disciplinary team of expert staff who have developed our service over the past 15 years. Aberdeen GICU has a platinum award for ECMO service delivery, one of only 20 centres around the world to achieve this accolade.  There will be opportunity to apply for further training and development within the ECMO team for those staff that demonstrate the required academic and clinical aptitude.

The general ICU has 16 beds and admits critically ill patients from across NHS Grampian, NHS Highland, Shetland/Orkney and nationally for specialist services unavailable elsewhere in Scotland.

Patients admitted require either level 2 or 3 care for a broad spectrum of critical illnesses.

The expectation includes you having excellent care values, a strong sense of team spirit and a motivation and commitment to lifelong learning.  Currently we are looking for nurses with varied experience in an acute clinical area and who have also successfully undertaken the Flying Start programme.  Once recruitment checks have been completed and a start date set, applicants will be given a supernummary period.

All staff will be provided with an ICU Educational Pathway depending on their previous experience.  Staff without an ICU accredited qualification will undertake a mandatory work-based learning course which consists of National Critical Care competencies and study days with the Practice Education Team.  Successful completion of this funded module will attract 30 SQF points via the University of Dundee and there is opportunity to self-fund and extend this academic course to Masters level.

Aberdeen ICU has recently installed a state-of-the-art paperless charting system which incorporates electronic prescribing.  A degree of familiarity with computer-based systems and Windows software would be advantageous, but full training will be given.

Aberdeen City is well known for its superb quality of life and enjoys first class amenities.  There are excellent connections with other British cities and Europe, flying time to London is just over one hour with more than 20 daily flights - and road and rail links to all points north and south are easily accessible.  Aberdeenshire includes some of the most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm National Park and a wide range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.

Become a vital part of our fantastic team delivering high quality, patient centered, evidence-based care for the half-million people who live in Grampian.

Join our team and we will invest in you with the education and development you need.

In this ICU – we will see you.

An attractive relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is available to successful candidates.
