Paediatric Nurse

The post holder will work as part of the paediatric team to provide a safe, effective, efficient care environment for the children and their families / carers, attending the private hospital. You must be sensitive to individual needs, based on family-centred care. To take responsibility for the holistic care of all children allocated to their care. Liaising with all departments to ensure a smooth efficient service for children and their families

Key Accountabilities

The successful post holder will be responsible and accountable for participating in the assessment of required care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of holistic care for children and their families. You would be working to promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research, evidence-based practice and the developmental of additional clinical skills in the speciality. You will be an advocate for the children.

Assisting in the safe, effective and efficient management of the service. Liaising with all departments within the hospital to ensure a timely, efficient and safe service is provided to all children and their families from referral to discharge.

Liaising with Consultants regarding scheduling, patient management etc.

Contributing to the maintenance of comprehensive information for patients that meets the required standards

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that each child is assessed and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated and accurately documented
  • To act as an advocate for child and family
  • Provide care with a clinical understanding of the therapies and drugs used within paediatrics and be competent in their administration
  • Understand the correct use and assembly of required equipment, safety precautions and ensure appropriate cleaning of equipment
  • Be competent in the administration of medication, including intravenous route
  • Maintaining and monitoring levels of stock to ensure there are adequate levels of supplies
  • Support other members of the ward team and ensure all patients receive appropriate care
  • Ensure clinical practices is evidence-based
  • Ensure the practical instruction and supervision of more junior staff in training
  • Maintain defined skills in communicating complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff. Overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events and seeking advice or guidance where necessary
  • Develop open and trusting relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary
  • Ensuring the safety of the ward and risk management process by actively participating in clinical risk and quality
  • Ensure that all patient care is documented and all the relevant documentation is completed accurately within agreed timescales, in line with NMC, CQC and local standards

Education and Research

  • Be responsible for own personal and professional development and practice, recognising own limitations and the need for continuing education.
  • Promote health education and provide appropriate information and advice to parents and carers
  • Participate in local, regional and national training events to keep abreast of advances in practice, to build knowledge and to share experiences and best practice
  • Initiate, implement and evaluate new ideas and changes in clinical practice as part of shared governance
  • Ensure a culture of continuous clinical improvement fostered in the workplace completing audits and implementing action plans as appropriate

Personal and professional development

  • Has an annual and produces agreed performance objectives
  • Reflects on own practice and keeps a personal learning portfolio for revalidation
  • Take active responsibility for own annual leave in line with local policy and procedure
