Job Summary

The National Heart & Lung Institute is seeking a Children’s Respiratory Research Nurse to support clinical studies investigating the development of wheezing in preschool children. You will be directly involved in the recruitment, education and monitoring of study participants and in the collection of biological samples and documentation of accurate data.

This role provides an excellent opportunity for enhancing an in-depth knowledge of study protocols and their application in practice, research methodology and working knowledge of the requirements of local, national and international research regulations. You will be accountable to the Paediatric Respiratory team. Good clinical practice training (GCP) will be arranged if you do not already have this. We would also encourage, and provide support, for you to complete higher educational training if appropriate. All training needed for recruitment of participants, sample collection and tests to be undertaken will be provided.

Duties and responsibilities

You will collect upper airway and blood samples as well as extensive questionnaire based and medical data from children and their parents. The post will require a combination of work within the Trusts when children are attending for clinically indicated procedures, as well as travel to participants homes (mainly within Greater London) to collect data and samples. The position also includes office-based work: organising logistics, communicating results, collating data and liaising with participants (which can be completed as home-based working).

Essential requirements

You should be a Registered Nurse (with suitable post experience in a relevant area). A relevant degree or equivalent qualification together with experience in working in research is desirable as is previous research experience.

Further Information

The post is part-time and fixed term (0.6 FTE) for one year in the first instance. There is the possibility the post can be full-time depending on the interests of the applicant and the availability of other research studies within the department.

Salary range:  £24,907 - £30,615 per annum plus up to £6,890 Inner London Allowance per annum.

As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory (standard/enhanced/enhanced for regulated activity) Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required for the successful candidate. Further information about the DBS disclosure process can be found at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies-public-bodies/dbs/ or by telephoning 0870 90 90 811.
