Working in Critical Care offers the opportunity to work within a team and follow a fixed rota pattern consisting of both day and night shifts.  That rota can be adapted to meet the needs of the service and successful candidates who would prefer an adjusted shift pattern.

The Critical Care department  in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is currently in a position to recruit Band 5 staff to join our highly dynamic, specialist and multi-disciplinary team to improve trauma and critical care; locally, regionally and nationally.

In Autumn 2018, Aberdeen became the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and now plays a key role in leading the delivery of specialist trauma care.  The North of Scotland Major Trauma Centre, based in Aberdeen, is one of the largest health campuses in Europe and is now part of an inclusive and collaborative Trauma Network.
Working in Aberdeen’s Critical Care unit affords the opportunity to train and work in the Hyperbaric Unit, the only category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber in Scotland.   We provide an elective service for a variety of conditions and a 24-hour emergency service to treat divers suffering from decompression illness (DCI).
Aberdeen General Critical Care unit will formally become the only Scottish ECMO centre in early 2020.  The ECMO service is delivered by a dedicated multi disciplinary team of expert staff who have developed our service over the past 15 years.  Aberdeen has a platinum award for ECMO service delivery, one of only 20 centres around the world to achieve this.  There will be opportunity to apply for further training and development within the ECMO team for those staff that demonstrate the required academic and clinical aptitude.

The general Critical Care unit admits critically ill patients from across NHS Grampian, NHS Highland, Shetland/Orkney and nationally for specialist services unavailable elsewhere in Scotland.

Patients admitted require either level 2 or 3 care for a broad spectrum of critical illnesses.

The expectation includes you having excellent care values, a strong sense of team spirit and a motivation & commitment to lifelong learning. Currently we are looking for nurses with varied experience in an acute clinical area.  Once recruitment checks have been completed and a start date set, applicants will be given a supernummary period.  All staff will be provided with a Critical Care Educational Pathway depending on their previous experience.  Staff without an accredited Critical Care qualification will undertake a mandatory work-based learning course which consists of National competencies and study days with the Practice Education Team.  Successful completion of this funded module will attract 30 SQF points via the University of Dundee and there is opportunity to self-fund and extend this academic course to Masters level.

The Critical Care unit in Aberdeen has recently installed a state-of-the-art paperless charting system which incorporates electronic prescribing.  A degree of familiarity with computer-based systems and Windows software would be advantageous, but full training will be given.

Aberdeen City is well known for its superb quality of life and enjoys first class amenities.  There are excellent connections with other British cities and Europe, flying time to London is just over one hour with more than 20 daily flights - and road and rail links to all points north and south are easily accessible.  Aberdeenshire includes some of the most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm National Park and a wide range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.

Become a vital part of our fantastic team delivering high quality, patient centered, evidence-based care for the half-million people who live in Grampian.

Join our team and we will invest in you with the education and development you need.

In this ICU – we will see you.

An attractive relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is available to successful candidates.

Informal visits to the unit are available – this will give you a valuable insight into the scope and practice of ICU and an opportunity to ask questions before you apply.  To arrange a visit, or get further information please contact Nurse in charge on 01224 559851.

Interviews will be held on Tuesday, 6 April 2021.

In addition, there are a further 14 community hospitals, situated in each of the main towns. As an employer, we take great care to ensure that all staff have a safe, happy and professional environment in which to work.
