Are you looking for your next career move?? Want to make a difference to the lives of the community you work and live in through the provision of a holistic truly person-centered service?

About the role:

Fetlar, known as the garden of Shetland due to its lush and fertile landscape, lies between the most northernly isles of Yell and Unst. Fetlar has a resident population of 61 and is actively working to increase the population by encouraging people to move to the island.

Being the resident nurse on the non-doctor island of Fetlar you will provide a nursing service to the resident population for episodes of both planned and emergency care, acting as first point of contact providing effective nursing assessment and treatment during an emergency situation in liaison with the General Practitioner based on the neighbouring island of Yell and/or in collaboration with the Scottish Ambulance Service First Responders with remote support from Paramedics.

About you:

You are expected to provide personal care for islanders, as required, either in the absence of on-island based social care provision or as part of an overall care package.

As an experienced District Nurse or Nurse Practitioner you will utilise your Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills and non-medical prescriber status to “see and treat” individuals with a minor illness/minor ailment independently without regular recourse to a medical practitioner.

Clinical support and supervision is available via the wider Community Nursing team and GPs based on Yell.

General IM&T skills, including the ability to record, retrieve and update on clinical systems as well as use Near Me to support clinical consultations are required. The postholder may also be required to undertake work remotely for Yell, Unst or other practice areas throughout Shetland based on their clinical expertise. This will be through technology enabled systems such as Ask My Gp, Near Me, and will be subject to effective telecommunications in order to facilitate this.

The post has a 7 day a week work pattern of Monday to Sunday, 9am – 5pm, with oncall provision for the out of hours period of evenings and Public Holidays to provide 24/7 cover.

First line access to healthcare support in the out of hours period is via NHS24. The resident postholder will be asked to attend to any patient who requires assessment, ongoing care or evacuation from the island in order to have their definitive healthcare needs met. An oncall allowance is paid for all periods of oncall and payment will be made at the appropriate enhanced rate for the duration of any time called out.

The working pattern of this post supports the provision of 2 weeks compensatory rest in a timely manner following a 2 week period of residential cover.
