As a part of this role, you will learn to manage and develop a team of nursing staff as well as the day-to-day management of an Emergency Department. It is a demanding and yet rewarding post that will require you to utilise effective communication and problem-solving skills, along with complex urgent and emergency care knowledge and operational management. 

Main duties of the job

The role includes working closely and effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in the management of the Emergency Department. This includes the support and leadership provided to nursing and support staff within the Emergency Department. The role also includes the continuing responsibility for the effective delivery of the philosophy, policies, standards of care and morale of the department in line with the Trust values.

The post holder will aim to ensure that all patients are provided with a safe and high quality standard of care. They will be aware of the Care Quality Commission standards and support the multi-disciplinary team ensuring that they are maintained. The post holder also has clinical, teaching, managerial, and staff development responsibilities

Person specification Experience Essential criteria

  • A minimum of 5 years recent post registration emergency nursing experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ recent experience working at Band 6 level in the Emergency Department
  • Leadership and management experience

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with an electronic patient record and other basic IT systems.
  • Clinical supervision experience

Skills Essential criteria

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation
  • Excellent communication skills. Approachable & polite.
  • IT skills e.g., word, excel, outlook and hospital database experience.
  • Budget management skills
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload.
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload when under pressure.
  • To be responsible for a team of nurses including appraisals and sickness management
  • Able to critically analyse and apply research to the clinical setting

Desirable criteria

  • Project management, knowledge & skills Ability to manage databases
  • Ability to recognize the contribution of members of the MDT

Knowledge Essential criteria

  • Sound knowledge of the principles & practice of emergency care.
  • Ability to manage change, both personally & as a facilitator.
  • Awareness of current NHS issues & appreciation of the issues surrounding governance & quality initiatives.
  • Knowledge of adult and child safeguarding

Qualifications Essential criteria

  • RGN qualification
  • Proven and current experience in the Emergency Medicine setting.
  • Post-registration A&E course or equivalent study
  • Honours degree – or currently working towards.
  • Hold registered mentor or teaching/ education qualification.
  • Clinical competence in- IV drug administration Venepuncture &
  • Cannulation

Desirable criteria

  • X-ray requesting
  • Working towards Masters level study.
  • ALS Instructor
  • ATNC Instructor
  • MIMM’s - Major Incident Medical Management
  • Current Certification in: Advanced Life Support Advanced Trauma Nursing Course
