Job Details

There is more to the RCN than you might think. We’re a trade union with a membership of over 465,000 nurses, midwives, nursing support workers and students. We support their practice, represent them, lobby on their behalf, and develop them. We exist to make a positive difference – to the working lives of our members and ultimately to standards in patient care. Our employees are drawn from many walks of life – we are nurses, marketers and communicators, administrators, IT professionals, policy and finance experts, lawyers… together we are so much more. We couldn’t do what we do without our people.

We're accredited with Investors in People Gold Standard. Our people are our greatest asset, and we want people who can contribute to our purpose in line with our values.

As a member of the Board of Directors this is an exciting opportunity to contribute to and implement the RCN’s strategic direction determined by Council, working with the UK leads providing leadership in England on the delivery of quality assurance, business development and agility on all aspects of professional nursing expertise and trade union service.

You’ll support the delivery of services to members and the wider nursing community across England, assisting in Board development in the individual regions and facilitating their Governance role and ensuring parliamentary engagement and communications at Country and government level.

Every day will be filled with possibilities as you find new ways to enable our members’ voice to be heard in the NHS, Health and Social Care, the Independent and Voluntary sectors.

Promoting and enabling a learning culture, where teamwork and cross-departmental collaboration are encouraged, excellence is recognised, and diversity is respected and valued is at the heart of this key leadership role, as well as the ability to work and influence at an executive level.

As a registered nurse with the NMC, you’ll need experience of leadership at a senior management level and of developing and experience of strategic working and leadership at Senior Management level.

You will need to be a motivating and effective leader, with the ability to work effectively negotiating and influencing a range of people at all levels as well as the ability to build and maintain crucial internal and external strategic relationships.

To succeed at the Royal College of Nursing all you need to do is think bigger, better and brighter. And with an attitude like that, anything’s possible.

What we offer you

We expect you to look after our members. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. Our pay is highly competitive with annual leave up to 32 days. We offer an impressive range of benefits, a broad range of learning development opportunities and an award-winning health and wellbeing programme.

Balancing work and life commitments is important to us as an organisation. We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs. Many of our employees enjoy flexible working enabling them to deliver results whilst having a good work life balance. We offer generous maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave packages.

As a result of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic most of our staff are currently working from home. When this ends, we’ll start trialling blended office and home working to empower our people to do their best work recognising that, to give our best, we must be able to balance the demands of work and home.
