Please see below details regarding the clinical areas at Kings College Hospital:

CHILDREN'S AMBULATORY (DENMARK HILL SITE)

Philip Isaacs:  an 8 bed day case unit which cares for patients from multiple specialties including haematology, hepatology, endocrinology, neurology and allergy diseases and disorders.

Children attend the unit for procedures and treatments related and occasionally unique to these conditions including infusions, red cell exchange, bone marrow aspirates, biopsies and MRI/CT scans.

Venepuncture/Cannulation accreditation or commitment to complete this is a requirement for this unit.

Paediatric Short Stay Unit a 6 bedded unit which works closely with the paediatric emergency department in serving the local population and also takes referrals from local GPs. Children are admitted for up to 48 hours for acute medical and surgical illnesses.

CHILDREN’S SURGICAL WARD (DENMARK HILL SITE)

 Children’s Surgical Ward is a 21 bedded unit caring for children requiring surgical procedures. There are 11 beds that are designated for general, gastro, orthopaedic and maxillofacial surgery. There are a further 7 beds that are dedicated to neurosurgery and neuro -oncology, 2 beds allocated for children requiring neuro-rehabilitation and an additional bed space for telemetry monitoring. Admissions to the children's surgical ward can be elective, emergency or through tertiary referral. 

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (DENMARK HILL SITE)

The Neonatal Unit is renowned for its specialist services and is a Level 3 provider in the South London Neonatal Network.  We offer a wide range of services both to the local diverse community and national specialist neonatal services. As well as being a referral unit for premature babies, we accept specialist referrals for abdominal, neurological and eye surgery and for the world-wide celebrated liver service at King’s. We work collaboratively with the internationally renowned Harris Birthright Centre to deliver highly specialised care to vulnerable new-borns and holistic care to the family. We provide a supportive environment with a diverse staff mix focused on professional development and advancement.  

 

RAYS OF SUNSHINE (DENMARK HILL SITE)

 King's College Hospital NHS Trust boasts the busiest paediatric liver centre in Europe, treating more than 3,000 children annually. Rays of Sunshine is our 18 bedded paediatric inpatient ward which treats a wide range of liver associated illnesses such as biliary atresia, hepatitis and liver tumours. We also care for patients in acute liver failure and specialise in liver and intestinal transplantation.

The ward has strong relationships with the broader multidisciplinary team such as our liver clinical nurse specialists and transplant coordinators and our nursing team is skilled to deliver an exceptionally high standard of care to dependent children and their families. No previous liver experience is required as we offer in house training and support.

 

THOMAS COOK CRITICAL CARE CENTRE (DENMARK HILL SITE)

Working in the Critical Care Centre will provide you with the opportunity to care for patients admitted under a variety of specialties:

  • Neurosurgery, trauma, general medicine, surgery, liver disease & transplantation, small bowel transplantation, , intensive care and high dependency care.

 

We are seeking nurses who have a minimum of 6 months experience working within a Children’s Critical Care setting, both in High Dependency and Intensive Care. Adult registered nurses with critical care or paediatric experience will be considered. You will be supported via a comprehensive development programme including local competencies, and clear career pathway. Future opportunities include the Children’s Critical Care Course and specialty courses i.e. Liver.

TONI & GUY WARD (DENMARK HILL SITE)

Toni & Guy Ward is a 15 bedded paediatric ward, with a 4 bedded bay and 11 cubicles. We are a general medical ward accepting patients from the emergency department with varying conditions. We care for children from 0 to 16 years of age. We are also a shared care centre for Oncology, and a tertiary care centre for Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle Cell disease. 

 We are a busy ward with a high turnover of patients, no day is the same and there are many learning opportunities for staff at any level.

CHILDREN'S WARD (PRINCESS ROYAL UNIVERITY HOSPITAL)

The Children’s Ward is a 12 bedded general paediatric area looking after children with a variety of medical conditions and some surgical, orthopaedic, urology and ENT problems.  We are part of the wider Child Health Team at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and located within the Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington. 

 

SPECIAL CARE BABY UNIT (PRINCESS ROYAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL)

 The 12 cot Special Care Baby Unit at the PRUH is a level 1 provider focusing predominantly on the developmental care needs of the neonate, some of whom will be recovering from long periods of hospitalisation linked to their prematurity or surgical procedures. As a result of recent changes, the Special Care Baby Unit now has 4 High Dependency cots, this enables us to provide respiratory support and parental nutrition to neonates.  This allows greater collaborative working with our partner unit, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Denmark Hill.
