Nursing at West Coast DHB: With us… your heart is in the right place.

As a Nurse, your job is about using your heart as much as your head. You’ve built a career out of caring for others; but that’s not limited to the physical, you care for the whole person, not just the symptoms they present with. In the same way, West Coast DHB offers Nurses a welcoming place to grow both professionally and personally, fostering the Nurse in you, as well as the person you are outside of the hospital. We know that for you it’s about being empowered to be your best at work and in life. And with us, your heart will be in the right place.

Our goal is to get our Nurses where they want to be; you’ll get back, what you put in. Our Nurses work as part of an integrated team across wards, meaning they specialise in the ‘generalist’ role and thrive on variety. This way of working paves the way for professional growth, meaning that when development opportunities arise, our Nurses are well-positioned to take advantage of them. Our DHB prides itself on being at the forefront of rural healthcare in Aotearoa (New Zealand), which offers Nurses with an interest in this area an exceptional learning pathway. Rural nursing is all about autonomy, responsibility, being able to identify community-need and to do something about it – an exciting prospect for the right person.

West Coast DHB own three major health facilities in Greymouth, Westport, and Reefton, and five general practices across the region. We employ over 1,000 people, almost half of which are Nurses. We can do almost anything on the Coast, offering a wide range of services including a comprehensive mental health service – both inpatient and community – with acute, rehabilitation, child and family, and alcohol and drug services.

Here you’ll find yourself part of a community of people that respect what you do. You may be one of many, but you will be valued as an individual and for what you can bring to the team.

You might be just starting out, or you may have years of experience; no matter your background or area of interest, we will work together to find the right role for you. Our current team of Nurses are diverse and friendly, and have a wide range of experience themselves. So whether you’re looking for a mentor, a running partner, or someone to grab a coffee with, you will find someone to fit the bill.

Outside the tightknit team at work, you’ll find warm and welcoming communities, as well as good schools, affordable housing, and a slower pace of life. Without the hustle and bustle of a big city, you can truly enjoy your life alongside like-minded people. The local scenery is breath-taking and you’re only a few hours’ drive from bigger cities like Christchurch and Queenstown; there truly is something for everyone.

For you it’s about head and heart working in harmony. Nursing at West Coast DHB fosters a positive state of mind and is a place you'll be empowered to be at your best, at work and in life. With us you can be carefree, and further your career, all while delivering the best possible care.

At West Coast DHB, your heart will be in the right place.

Your application will be reviewed and progressed as soon as possible.

The role that you are applying for is one that may only be performed by a person who has been vaccinated against Covid-19.  It is therefore a condition of this application that you are vaccinated against Covid-19.  As a person working in the health and disability sector you will come into contact with a large number of people, some of whom may be vulnerable.  Without a vaccine, there is the risk that you may contract Covid-19.  The requirement to be vaccinated is to keep you safe and also to endeavour to protect others against the potential transmission of Covid-19 as a result of you contracting it in the course of your employment.
