The Saolta University Health Care Group provides acute and specialist hospital services to the West and North West of Ireland – counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and adjoining counties.

Sligo University Hospital (as part of the Saolta University Healthcare Group) has 281 Operational Beds providing acute hospital services to the catchment population of Sligo/ Leitrim/ West Cavan and South Donegal.The mainstream acute services provided by Sligo University Hospital cover the following specialties:

Emergency Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics / Gynaecology, Medicine, Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Nephrology,  Oncology, Pain Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Haematology,  Microbiology, Orthodontics, Pathology, Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine, Radiology.  In addition, Services in Immunology and Radiation.  Oncology are provided via University College Hospital, Galway. 

A full range of clinical and non-clinical support services are provided, including Theatres, CSSD, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Medical Records, Social Work and Therapies.

Services are provided on a regional basis with outreach services provided to Letterkenny University Hospital in respect of ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Dermatology, Rheumatology and Orthodontics Services. Outpatient clinics are also provided at Community Hospitals in our catchment area across many specialties.

The workforce of approximately 1800 staff provide a range of highly specialised services extending to 150,000 people in Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and West Cavan and surrounding counties.

Sligo University Hospital provides high-quality healthcare to the people of Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan. SUH provides Acute Inpatient, Outpatient, and Day Services as well as Regional Specialty Services in Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat Services. SUH has a Medical Academy with NUI Galway which includes clinical rotations/ education for medical students from NUI Galway on Sligo University Hospital Campus.

We are now seeking a new Director of Nursing (Band 1) Acute, a management role reporting operationally to the Hospital Manager and professionally to Chief Director of Nursing & Midwifery, Saolta University Health Care Group

The Purpose of the Post is operating in accordance with the policies of the Hospital, the Director of Nursing works in collaboration with other professionals and service managers to achieve the service goals of the hospital and to contribute to the development of the Saolta University Health Care Group.

Responsibilities include:

  • The person holding this post is required to support the principle that the care of the patient comes first at all times and will approach their work with the flexibility and enthusiasm necessary to make this principle a reality for every patient to the greatest possible degree
  • Act as Patient Advocate and represent Nursing at GDONM Forum
  • Accept responsibility for management of all nursing services over a 24 hour period and ensure that systems are in place to support this responsibility
  • Develop, maintain and review the nursing organisational structure in the context of overall organisational objectives and within the Integrated Services area.
  • Develop annual plan for Nursing
  • Develop and implement (in association with Assistant Directors of Nursing/ Managers/Service Managers and Consultants) operational policies, protocols and guidelines for the utilisation of beds and a systematic audit of bed usage.
  • Driving and promoting a Performance Management culture.
  • Prepare annual financial estimates of nursing and related manpower, including education and training needs.
  • Participate as a key manager in the overall financial planning of the hospital including the assessment of priorities in pay and non-pay expenditure.
  • Participate, as required, in the recruitment, selection and appointment of nursing and related staff.
  • The identification and development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which are congruent with the Hospital’s service plan targets.
  • Ensure that modern standards of clinical nursing care are in operation and that regular monitoring of nursing care is undertaken through audit.

Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:

(i) Are registered, or are eligible for registration, in the General Nurse Division, and other divisions as relevant to the specific service, of the Register of Nurses and Midwives, as appropriate, maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or Equivalent.

And

(ii) Have 10 years post registration nursing experience and 5 years nursing management experience at a minimum of Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM 2) level of which 3 must have been in an acute setting.

And

(iii) Have successfully completed a post registration programme of study, as certified by the education provider, which verified that the applicant has achieved a National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) major academic Level 8 or higher award maintained by Quality & Qualifications of Ireland (QQI) or can provide written evidence from the Higher Education Institute that they have achieved the number of ECTS credits equivalent to a Level 8 or higher in a health care management related area or Equivalent.

And

a) Candidate must possess the requisite clinical, leadership, managerial and administrative knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
