Northumbria University is delighted to have recently become an approved provider to conduct the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Test of Competence. We are one of five test centres based around the UK. The Test Centres provide Part Two of the NMC’s Test of Competence for international nurses and midwifes seeking registration with the NMC and for those nurses and midwives looking to renew their registration after a career break. Part Two is a nursing or midwifery Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which simulates a clinical environment and various ‘patient’ scenarios which are likely to be encountered by registered nurses and midwives. Candidates are expected to utilise a modern evidence base and effectively demonstrate safe practical application of nursing and midwifery skills. The Test of Competence is blueprinted against the current UK pre-registration standards which are available on the NMC’s website.

Northumbria University has been busy developing the new competence test centre (CTC) on our Coach Lane Campus, a short distance outside Newcastle City Centre, and assessed our first candidates on the 28th March 2022.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and highly skilled nurses and midwives to work in the CTC as an Examiner and be part of the recruitment of high quality nurses and midwives to the NMC register.

The Examiner at the NMC Competence Test Centre will ensure the assessment of the safe and effective application of clinical skills by nurses and midwives, at the point of entry to the register, via OSCE.

They will contribute to the development, delivery, and assessment of specifically designed simulated skills sessions for candidates undertaking the NMC OSCE assessments and deliver the required evidence based underpinning safe and effective assessment of nursing and midwifery practice to meet the proficiencies and learning outcomes of the assessments.

We welcome applications from registered nurses from across all four fields of nursing, and would particularly welcome those with a mental health, paediatric or midwifery background. A current NMC registration, relevant to your field of practice is essential.

Due to the nature of this role secondments, part time and varied hours will be considered.

The successful candidate will have experience of teaching, mentoring and supervising nursing or midwifery students and qualified staff in a clinical or higher education setting. They will also have knowledge and understanding of current developments related to the NMC Test of Competence, have good verbal and written communication and presentation skills with the ability to clearly articulate complex issues and have a willingness to support the Lead Examiner and Assistant Lead Examiners in the moderation of the OSCE assessment within the test centre.

Northumbria University takes pride in, and values, the quality and diversity of our staff. We welcome applications from all members of the community. The University holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award in recognition of our commitment to improving employment practices for the advancement of gender equality.
