About St Bartholomew's Hospital, Nuffield Health


In April 2022, we'll open the doors to Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew's Hospital: The City of London's only independent hospital, situated next to St Bartholomew's NHS hospital. This will be our flagship centre for cardiac services and will also provide a full range of surgical and medical services, including: orthopaedics, oncology, general surgery, gynaecology and urology services.

The new hospital will consist of:

  • 48 inpatient and day case bedrooms

  • 28 consultation rooms

  • Three digital operating theatres

  • Cardiac catheterisation lab

  • Specialist intensive care beds

  • Oncology day unit

  • Endoscopy and minor ops theatre

  • Full diagnostic imaging suite including MRI, CT, ultrasound, mammography and general X-ray

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Oncology Nurse Specialist to join our brand-new team in London. Together with the Clinical Head of Department you will operationally be responsible for specialist Oncology knowledge, advise and skills for the hospital, enjoying the chance to make a real difference with Nuffield Health. We'll expect you to actively contribute to service development, policies and strategies, identify opportunities during the build phase. Once the hospital is operational, you will support individuals and teams to deliver high quality, clinically effective patient care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Along the way, you'll build strong relationships with consultants, hospital senior leaders, a wide range of healthcare professionals and, of course, patients. Working collaboratively alongside the consultants, you'll ensure patients benefit from the best possible treatment and care.

Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, your specialist training must include an Oncology postgraduate qualification and a minimum of ILS. You will have extensive experience of managing Oncology patients across a wide range of specialisms, ideally have a qualification in teaching and assessment, together with some mentoring experience. You've also got impressive, senior level knowledge and will have a minimum of 4 years' senior experience working in an Oncology setting. You'll be accountable for leading, motivating, educating and supervising the nursing and multidisciplinary team.

The aim is that all new patients diagnosed with colorectal/anal cancer will have a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and wherever possible the CNS will be present when the diagnosis is conveyed to the patient. They are required to play an integral part in the development of quality driven service to all patients treated at Nuffield Health at St Barts with colorectal and anal tumors. They will have an extensive knowledge of the care required by these patient groups providing professional leadership to the ward/department nursing staff and will:

  • Assist in identifying the needs of patients, their families, the nurses and the multi-disciplinary team; in order to provide a comprehensive, optimal service for patients with colorectal and anal cancer.

  • The service will provide full support for patients undergoing investigations and treatment for colorectal and / or anal cancer.

  • Act as a key contact for patients using the FIT service. Ensure that positive results are relayed to the consultant within specified time frames.

  • Act as a key contact for the patient throughout their treatment pathway or ensure responsibility for nominating a key contact for the patient, in accordance with the Peer Review Measures.

  • Collaborate in the development of care pathways for the management of these patients.

  • Act as a resource to all members of the trust wide multi-disciplinary team re: best practice in the provision of care to this patient group.

  • Participate in consultant outpatient's clinics for this client group.

  • Where a need is identified CNS to propose and establish new nurse-led clinics.

  • Be present in the Barts GI MDT to be a patient advocate for NH patients.

  • To develop a range of nurse led patient services and research/audit projects.

  • Promote and maintain effective communication.

  • Support the cancer services in line with the NHS Cancer Plan the Cancer Reform Strategy

  • Provide ongoing psychological, emotional, information support and advice to patients following discharge home.

  • Develop the service of the clinical nurse specialist, raising the profile of CNS's in the hospital.
