Job overview

The Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) cancer service in University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) was commissioned in 2009 and has been through a period of rapid development. This includes setting up a clinical network service to support the TYA patient, the development of an online MDT meeting, and the establishment of the first ever age-appropriate Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in the southwest. The service was awarded a Macmillan Professionals Excellence Award in Innovation Excellence and a British Journal of Nursing (BJN) Award for Innovation.

As the lead nurse at UHBW the post-holders primary focus alongside the TYA Lead Clinician is to lead the regional southwest TYA cancer service. This includes maintaining, developing, and improving the quality of patient care, positively influencing both outcomes and experiences in line with peer review measures and the national service specification for TYA cancer. Working as part of the extended Children, Teenage & Young Adult Cancer Operational Delivery Network team, the post holder will improve networking across the southwest between professionals, Trusts and other interested parties, and develop and support shared care arrangements and facilities within designated hospitals outside UHBW.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also lead the development of excellence in clinical care for TYA with cancer as the lead nurse to the newly formed TYA cancer operational delivery network. In this capacity the lead nurse will influence specialist commissioners and local clinical teams, providing leadership, expert nursing advice, service-planning and strategic decision making in TYA cancer care.

The post holder will be required to work autonomously and exercise a high level of clinical expertise when identifying and caring for the specific needs of TYA patients with cancer. Funded by Teenage Cancer Trust the post holder will promote and support their philosophy of care surrounding TYA with cancer.

• Professional knowledge acquired at MSc level supplemented by specialist training & experience
• Post Graduate Qualification / Short Course in specific speciality
