Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The regional arm of Te Korowai-Whāriki includes the Central Regional Forensic Mental Health Service which operates at the interface between Mental Health Services and the Justice System and works within the following settings - prisons, courts, community, and inpatient. The Service offers assessment and rehabilitation services to defendants charged with criminal offences and offenders who have psychiatric illness.

The Central Regional Forensic Service also is involved with the Youth Court providing a Court Liaison Service and completing specialist psychological or psychiatric assessments ordered by the Court through Children Young Persons and Family Act, 1989 (Section 333). The service provides consultation and liaison to the CAMHS services and provides services to Youth Justice residential facilities.

The Youth Forensic Service provides a specialist mental health screening role in the courts and prisons, as well as offering advice and triage. As well as the youth courts, in the central region there is also a youth unit within the Hawkes Bay Prison, young women aged 17 and under in Arohata Prison, and the Lower North Youth Justice Facility (for remand and sentenced youth through the Youth Court) in Palmerston North.

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist who will work in a multidisciplinary team setting, providing high quality assessment, treatment and transition management of young people with severe mental health and substance use issues who have or are alleged to have offended, with involvement of family/whanau. This includes provision of reports for the court under appropriate legislation. You will assume a leadership role within the MDT in conjunction with other senior clinicians and the Team Leader and support the ongoing development of the service.

Ideally, you will have the following:

  • Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • Relevant experience and training
  • If applying from overseas you must meet the New Zealand Immigration Service requirements.
